Owner description: The Shell Grotto is one of the world’s most mysterious places: a series of underground rooms and passageways covered by 2000sqft of exquisite mosaic created with 4.6 million shells. Discovered in 1835, nobody knows who created it, when, or why. “The grotto is simultaneously haunting and homely. It could be a lost pagan shrine or have ‘A Present From Margate’ picked out in the shells - it wouldn’t matter. It’s still magical, mysterious and (once it’s in your head) impossible to forget.” Far From the Sodding Crowd: More Uncommonly British Days Out, Penguin Books, 2007

It's odd. It's an enigma. I've been a few times - so it must be entertaining. The kids like it and I look in wonder at the amount of work that went into it.

We have visited the Shell Grotto on a number of occasions and never get bored with the mystery of it's origins. If you are in Margate you should not miss the chance to visit this amazing place.

We had high expectation but we were slightly disappointed. We spent in the grotto about 10mins, took some nice pics. It is an unusual little place, you can do a quiz when you are there, we didn’t. Feels money oriented comparing to Margate museum.

My friend took me here today. It was my first time ever to see this much scales of shell. 4.6 million shells. It’s amazing how and where all this shells came from and what is more amazing to know that someone has built this. If you like to see something different then this place is the place....
