Owner description: Turner Contemporary is a pioneering visual arts organisation using our namesake’s spirit of radical enquiry to activate art and people, in our galleries and beyond. Located in an elegant purpose-built gallery, designed by David Chipperfield Architects, the gallery looks out on the very views that JMW Turner immortalised in many of his key works. Turner Contemporary presents a rolling programme of temporary exhibitions, events and learning opportunities which make intriguing links between historic and contemporary art. The gallery offers a space for everyone to discover different ways of seeing, thinking and learning.

As galleries go it is rather uninspiring and could do with more actual picture exhibitions - particularly by Turner! The cafe is well worth going to - they have some lovely meals made from local produce (the breakfast menu is always pleasing) I often pop into the T.C. just for a coffee and home-made scone!
Be careful of the parking - don't park on the prom. it is expensive and the machines make it impossible for you to have a short stay...go into the care park across the road and walk back!

If you only know Mondrian's lines and rectangles then this show is a revelation - landscapes and a self-portrait, showing parallels with Monet and Van Gogh. And it's free and not crowded when we went on a Wednesday afternoon.
Nice cafe too, and another nearby (Cafe G) and all-day parking in Morrisons mult-storey in Hawley Street.

To be be fair there are about 5 very nice Turners, which are listed as "could be a Margate sea scape" !!!! but they could be anywhere and they're right at the end.
The rest of it is just pretentious, one room looks like it should be a playgroup area but no toys, just a rainbow wall with 7 tables, lot's of wasted space that's it, what a waste of lottery money.
The best thing to do, if it's still raining, is to watch the car park which is so badly signposted that cars drive in (1 every minute) do a full circle and drive out, a huge space but you can't park unless you have a blue badge.
There was a huge plastic sheet held up with washing pegs as a central feature which reminded me of cub camp and drying out the ground sheets. Even the toilet doors are dumbed down to make them look arty.
The cafe is nice. It's free to go in and they suggest a £3 donation, make up your own minds.

Having been here many times before, I always look forward to an impending visit. Saw the excellent Mondrian exhibition and Edmund de Waal installation. Great little museum shop and cafe complete the experience.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Turner Contemporary Art Gallery at Margate. Lovely presentation and coffee shop was above average.
