“Very nice stay”
Reviewed 24 August 2013

We had a very nice stay at Sands, a lovely room with a balcony and sea view and a nice dinner in the restaurant. The room was beautifully fitted and the bathroom was lovely too. We enjoyed our breakfast, very good local produce used. If we had not to go back to work, we probably would have stayed another night. Earlier comments from another reviewer about the personal appearance of one member of staff seem very unfair and unwarranted. All the waiting staff were charming.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra for a room with a sea view, Margate Bay is spectacular.

We found this hotel online and it had only been open a few weeks. Everything was to the highest finish, bedrooms and public areas were beautiful and classy. Only a few bedrooms on each floor which was nice. We had a see view balcony off the room and we were really pleased we did, as the bay view was beautiful.
We were greeted by Cherry, who has to be one of the most cheerful and helpful receptionist we have come across.
We enjoyed a late afternoon drink on the roof terrace, which gave us views over the whole area. The seating was weather proof so even though it had been raining, we could just turn the cushions over!
Our waiter was Matt - a young lad who was polite, friendly and efficient. In fact we thought the service throughout our stay was very good (they have obviously taken note of earlier comments which had worried us a bit) and we were really pleased with the whole stay.
2 things more - Margate is a complete dump - the hotel is by far the best thing in it! If you are going to play bingo and eat chips you will be fine, but otherwise, recession has hit the high street and most of the shops are boarded over. Hopefully the excellent refurbishment of Sands and the two properties next door are the start of regeneration as the beach is beautiful.
Secondly, I left a gold and diamond ring there and did not discover this until I got home. after several days of searching, the wonderful staff found it - in the safe!! where the housekeeper had put it before going on holiday. So glad to have it back and to have witnessed the honesty.
Try it!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view - it really is worth the extra. However, there are NO bad rooms!

What a fantastic night we had celebrating our friends 50th birthday, rooms are finished beautifully and have everything you could ever want! The views of the sands and harbour are stunning, we enjoyed a late afternoon G&T on the roof terrace, followed by evening drinks in the bar, we didn't sample dinner but we will next time! Breakfast was lovely and the staff were very welcoming and friendly, we thoroughly enjoyed our night and morning stay and finished off with coffee on the balcony. All and all Margate is in the up and the Sands Hotel has raised the bar to a new level, cool, sophisticated, original, beautiful and cosy, it's a must!!!!!!!! We're going back very soon!

We went for a lunch only, we didn't stay at the hotel. Very clean modern restaurant. Welcoming staff showed us to a table on the balcony overlooking the wonderful view of Margate beach. We had two courses for £15 from the lunch menu. I thoroughly enjoyed my vegetarian selection, my friend had fishcake. Our dessert was lovely. All the time attended on by a friendly waitress.Only niggle was the fishcake could have done with a larger portion. But very
tasty. It's a new hotel and I think it will do well. Give it a try :)

Still early days for the newly opened Sands Hotel. It has a few little problems like wifi connection and door 'key' issues but we had a really good stay. Room was finished to a very high standard and exceptionally clean. Lovely bath and shower. Very effective AC. The rooms all are quite small but that is the nature of the old building.

A really beautiful location. Excellent sea views, right in the town, perfect.

We had a room on the top floor. Although it had its own balcony no view to be had when sitting down but we did not care because just above was the roof terrace. Fantastic. Amazing 360 degree views of the roofs of Margate and the sea. Just the place for tea and watch the sunset.

Pity no service on roof. This is planned for in the future.

Service was very good, with friendly, helpful staff. I would have liked to have seen a member of staff present at all times on the reception desk. Information pack about the hotel etc not available in room. I am sure in time that will appear.

Breakfast was outstanding. Yes I could have breakfast at the Sands every day. As a vegetarian the dinner menu was rather limited with only one vegetarian main dish. If you are not keen on pasta then what is option but to eat elsewhere, which is what we did. We ate next door. Big mistake but that is another story.

I am sure we will stay again because Margate is so wonderful and there is nowhere as good as the Sands in the centre of town.

Room Tip: Get a room with a sea view and a balcony. If not available have no fear, the roof is perfect.

This hotel is not cheap but we thought it definitely worth the money. The location opposite the beach and 2 mins walk to the Tate and Old Town could not be better. The hotel is done to a very high standard inside and our room was lovely. The terrace and restaurant overlook the bay and we had a fantastic evening meal watching the sunset, thanks to the member of staff who suggested we move tables to see it properley. The food served for our evening meal and breakfast was excellent. The service was friendly and attentive other than for afternoon tea, where we had to wait a long time and then the tea that we were served was cold. This was a pity, because the two young people who looked after us for our evening meal and breakfast were so helpful. We also enjoyed very much our trip to the Tate.

Congratulations for taking a punt in putting something chic and elegant into Margate.
At £200 per room for a night the service badly let's this hotel down. Not enough staff. Clearly problems in the kitchen.
Breakfast was a farce. Buffett table had run out of many things and were not being replenished. Tables were not reset
resulting in guests helping themselves to cutlery or glasses from other tables. The staff very polite and friendly but run off their feet.
The owner seemed to swan about cluelessly making sure that his own families needs were catered for whilst paying guests were terribly neglected.
On confronting him there was simply no comment, no apology, no explanation, no effort to engage at all just a spineless shrug of the shoulders.
Would I like to return? Yes
Will I return? No, not sure that I would want to risk being so utterly disappointed for £200, an expensive risk!
Dear owner: 'man up.'
