“The Phoenix rises..........”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 September 2013

We stayed for two nights at the Sands on the 3rd and 4th September 2013.
It is a fine hotel overlooking Margate's wide sandy bay. We were blessed with bright, warm sunshine that improves any experience but this hotel is outstanding. It benefits from having been open only for about three months and so everything is new and shiny. The building restoration has been carried out with thoughtfulness and care. The public areas are bright and airy and the bedrooms glitzy but still with a comfortable feel. We had Room 01 which has an open balcony overlooking the sea, watching the beautiful sunsets across the bay with a glass of champage and a complimentary bag of crisps was magical! The double glazing is very efficient and the room is quiet when the balcony doors are closed. We had not expected to need cooling in September but the air conditioning was invaluable on these warm days. There are two similar rooms, 02 and 03, there are balcony rooms on a higher floor but these have brick surrounds to the balcony giving a more restricted outlook when seated.
There is a restful roof top terrace providing wide vistas of the bay.
Meals could be eaten outside overlooking the sea or inside where the sea view is still impressive. Breakfast was a gentle and pleasurable start to the day and Dinner was outstanding, the food was cooked to a very high standard with excellent tastes and textures, the desserts were sublime served in very satisfying quantities.
The reception staff were very welcoming and the restaurant staff respectfully friendly and efficient. We had one waitress who perhaps needs a little more training, she was pleasant but not quite on top of her role, remembering the order and delivering it were not her greatest attributes. This was a small hiccup quickly sorted out in what was otherwise a very happy and enjoyable stay.
The address of the hotel is given as Marine drive and it can be accessed from here using an intercom to the reception desk upstairs. The 'main' entrance with easy access is in High Street but parking outside to unload is a little tricky here. The hotel has a few reserved parking spaces in a car park behind High Street, they provide, for a small charge, a notice to be displayed in your vehicle that gives 24 hour parking.
We will return......

Room Tip: As mentioned in the review, rooms 01, 02, and 03 are the best balcony rooms, the higher balcaony roo...

Any new business that has the guts and imagination to invest in Margate is worthy of huge praise. To say The Sands is a welcome addition to the town is to monumentally understate the case, providing as it does, a level of care and attention to detail that is, to be brutally honest, all but anachronistic in the town. What Margate needs is confidence, to believe in itself again, to grow and develop and challenge the idea that all seaside towns in the UK are in decline. The Sands is part of that process and I really admire the vision of the owners to bring the building back to life and give visitors the opportunity to enjoy that extraordinary view from the terrace as the sun goes down and to help turn the town from a days destination to a weekend trip.
Yes, I had minor - very minor - reservations about the slightly too 'Footballers Wives' for my taste decor and the levels of the music in the restaurant, but as I was enjoying a glass of wine, served by some of the nicest staff in Kent, looking across the bay at that amazing sunset, thinking about how inspired Turner was to paint it and how blessed we are in Thanet to have all this new energy and excitement popping up everywhere, I was more than happy to let go of my cynicism and enjoy...

Room Tip: Seaside Rooms are beyond compare

Margate has needed a facility like this for years. Modern clean decor (in keeping with the Turner Contemporary gallery 200 yards up the road). Comfortable bar area off the dining room. The dining room leads on to a large terrace with superb views across the bay.
The bedrooms are splendid and very up market for Thanet...but maybe The Sands Hotel is laying down a new bench mark.
The fixed price lunch (2 courses £15.00) was splendid.. The catch of the day...baked cod....was superbly cooked. Service just a little slow (but who cared with that view?) and probably due to a surprisingly large number of covers for a Friday lunch time.
The owner, Nick Conington, is very much hands on and I am sure he will build on what is a most promising start.

We stayed as a family on Saturday 24th August. There was a slight hiccup with our booking at the Walpole and we were very lucky to get a family room with sea view at the last minute.
From entering into this hotel we were truly blown away by the beautiful surroundings. Everything from the light fittings, rugs, table and chairs is of top quality and gracefully stunning. The Manageress/Front of house excels in her position to both make you welcome and relaxed.
Our room was just wonderful. It was spacious and amazingly decorated with luxurious bedding, ornate lamps and a quality sofa bed. The bathroom was of such high specification. Nothing has been overlooked and no expense spared on renovating this establishment.
The jewel in this crown is the open roof terrace which is open to just residents. It has the feel of a private spanish boutique lounge/bar with oversized outdoor sofas and sitting. The panoramic views were enchanting.
We did not have dinner as we had a big afternoon lunch/tea but thought the nibbles such as crisp/mini chedders etc were a lovely thought.
As the weather was nice on the Sunday Morning we had our breakfast out on the terrace. An excellent choice from kippers to full english and eggs benedict. We all thoroughly enjoyed our choices. The waiting staff were very friendly and attentive as again was the manageress.
The hotel is more expensive than one would think to pay for the area. But I believe well worth it. I can not wait to come back here, perhaps just hubby and myself so I can experience the restaurant.
The Owner and Staff must feel very proud of what they have achieved. And Margate must be very thankful that an investment of this type has hit the area.

Room Tip: Worth paying extra for sea view or terrace.

Sands Hotel is simply stunning. It only opened in spring this year, after a yearlong renovation of the building. As you can imagine, this investment has seen Sands Hotel become the gem of Margate.

The town itself looks rather dilapidated, what with a Woolworths a street away without even the window displays taken down never mind the signage, but stepping into Sands was like receiving the red carpet treatment right from the start.

The receptionist was full of smiles and the welcome was warm. Without any delay, we were shown up to our room with the assurance that whatever we needed would be on hand, just a call away.

We were even shown to our room by the same lady who was quite concerned that everything was to our expectations and desire.

After ushering the staff lady away and checking out the room properly – complete with mini bar, safe, snacks, wi-fi, flat screen tv, temperature control, gowns, ambient bathroom and a bloody amazing sea view – we hot-footed it down to the well stocked shiny bar. Yes, everything was shiny. A bottle of your finest Rose please; wine cooler, glasses, thank you.

An evening spent in the bar, then the restaurant and finally on the glamorous rooftop terrace for champagne and canapes was made even more special by watching the set set over the spectacular and sweeping Margate bay and harbour. We had a magical time at Sands Hotel and I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. SImply fantastic.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a sea view. You won't be disappointed!

Lovely hotel for a night away from London. This is a new hotel, perfectly located for the Turner Gallery. The decor is stylish and comfortable. The service is friendly and considerate. It has an excellent and inexpensive restaurant and we were glad we had booked in advance. Recommended.

We had a very nice stay at Sands, a lovely room with a balcony and sea view and a nice dinner in the restaurant. The room was beautifully fitted and the bathroom was lovely too. We enjoyed our breakfast, very good local produce used. If we had not to go back to work, we probably would have stayed another night. Earlier comments from another reviewer about the personal appearance of one member of staff seem very unfair and unwarranted. All the waiting staff were charming.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra for a room with a sea view, Margate Bay is spectacular.
