We stayed in Gardeners Cottage for a family celebration (daughter's 18th birthday surprise). We had the whole cottage to ourselves having booked the 3 rooms. Sandwich is beautiful. We ate at Luigi's restaurant in the town where the food was awesome. On our return we ventured over to the lovely big house for a drink in the famous living room that has become so familiar from Gogglebox and we were delighted to be joined shortly after by Dom and Tigger who stayed with us until 2.45 am. We were honoured to be able to toast Dom a happy 50th birthday at midnight and the surprise for my daughter could not have gone better. Dom and Tigger were the perfect hosts. The cottage was beautiful - clean and comfy. The next morning we explored the stunning Secret Gardens where once again we bumped into Dom and Tigger who impressively remembered our names. It's little things like that that make you feel special. It was the most relaxing weekend ever and we would love to return one day. As my daughter pointed out, it's not everyone who can say they got tiddly for the first time on their 18th whilst celebrating with Dom from Gogglebox on his 50th! Thank you for a memorable stay in a beautiful environment.

Room Tip: I did hear that the rooms in the main house were very large and nice. Gardeners cottage was perfect...

I wanted somewhere special to propose to my girlfriend and this was the perfect place. Arriving at lunch time we found eating out very easy as there are loads of places to eat within 10 minutes walk of the hotel. We had some time in the lounge of the Salutation where we had a free drink and spent time with Steph, Dom and the other guests who were all great and it was good fun. We decided to have dinner in the Salutation and the food was very tasty. Moving on in the night after dinner my plan for the proposal was starting to go a bit wrong and this is when Tigger, Steph & Dom really helped massively to make the proposal perfect. At a moments notice, they told me to wait 15 minutes to give them time to sort something out. They did a great job and I walked my girlfriend out under the moonlight sky up the secret garden and across a little bridge where under a veranda the scene was set with two candles and a bottle of champagne in an ice bucket and she said yes - great!! In general the room was a good size with a nice view of the gardens and the staff where all very helpful. Thanks to Tigger, Steph and Dom, the occasion could not have gone better! Chris & Belinda

We wanted to book somewhere extra special for my Sister's 50th Birthday - and we found it!
To say it was the most unique place to stay is an understatement and I strongly recommend that if you have the chance to experience The Salutation then you must!

As I had been making the arrangements over the last few month's by the time I met Jilly Anne (the house manager) I felt like we were best friends! She was as equally excited as I was that this whole weekend was a surprise for my Sister and joined in with the 'is that them?! hide and seek as we waited for her and her other half to drive through the entrance! Beau and the other members of staff all got on board too and ran around making sure all were up to speed with the surprise! Our guests were arriving over the next hour and everyone was squirrelled in, briefed by Jilly Anne and I have never seen my sister so overwhelmed with joy - all because of these wonderful members of staff!

As the day unfolded it was like being at home with friends (if you were lucky enough to live somewhere like the Salutation!) and it was so relaxed - when I say nothing was too much trouble it's so true. We met Tigger who is part of the team, he chatted to us about our menu requirements - basically we had chosen ourselves what we wanted them to cook later that evening - so accomodating and very special, no choosing off a standard menu for us! He told us he had organised our very own pianist for later and chatted to everyone, asking about us and reiterating that we should treat The Salutation like home. Anything we needed was organised (and poor Beau, one minute I tell him we need sandwiches for 14 - then I change my mind as that would give the game away more guests were arriving so Beau, thanks for putting up with my 'now - no not now - actually now!' instructions!)

The evening was amazing - top nosh and fantastic service! Then, we all 'retired' to the drawing room and had a wonderful night: singing, laughing, enjoying this truly special occasion!
It was great to meet Dom (and his daughter with GiGi earlier in the day) who was wonderful and so friendly in real life, like he was truly glad to be there with us.

I could go on and on (but won't I promise!) but this is not your standard 5* establishment.
It oozes charm and warmth and is as unique as it comes, it's eccentric and quirky - if you want luxury and feeling like you're so so welcome - then this is the place for you. For your stay, you are part of the family, you'll know you're welcome and if you want to take your shoes off, chill out on the sofa and enjoy yourselves then I suggest you better book now!

Thanks guys and can't wait to see you again in September!
Jo & Jason Wright :-) xxx

we where here for a weekend to celebrate a friends 50th birthday where to start with what was such a great weekend firstly lets deal with the negatives from others

we where greeted immediately on arrival and offered to be shown to our room
we then occupied the rear terrace for all the afternoon as friends arrived and nothing was to much trouble for any member of the staff we met tigger who gave us the low down on times as we where eating there that night.

our room the Gaspard had outstanding views over the gardens which are beautiful easily furnished with nice finishing touches clean and presentable has massive bathroom only downside for us was it was a twin room but it was our choice to remain in the main house with our friends.

the evening meal was good service was more than adequate and again staff where ever attentive and helpful

after dinner we occupied the drawing room where a member of staff was playing the piano well soon she was doing requests and by the time Dom dropped in and said hi we where well into singing and enjoying ourselves to which other guest joined us to make the evening a great celebration

what can i say about our host obviously a bonus to have met him not just because of the goggle box this is one very nice and genuine person who enjoys the company of others and welcomes you to his home as opposed to being a guest in an establishment.

finally the breakfast again good food nice portion and attention to detail and service

we have stayed in many 5 start hotels and yes this expensive b&b to some but for us it was truly magnificent time its not hotel service firstly you will not be waited on hand and foot you will not get a turn down service etc. what you will get is staff that if asked will go out of there way to help a great venue to make a celebration good fun

planning the next thing we can get back to celebrate there

well done to all the team

thank you

Room Tip: we stayed in Gaspard great room but is a twin but well proportioned with great views over the bowlin...

Visited the gardens and tea rooms. I feel that access to the gardens is overpriced at £6.50. A more realistic price would be £3.00. The Tea Room is perhaps the worst I have ever been to. The service was shambolic with the unbelievable excuse when asked for lemon to go with tea that "the chef had gone home and taken the lemons with him"! The amount of cream and jam to go with scones was miniscule and only when asked for more were we given an acceptable amount. However it took so long that the tea was cold by the time we could eat the scones. The final I insult came when paying the bill. I was presented with a bill of over £27 for 2 basic cream teas and two additional pots of tea. Considering the cream teas were £8.50 each and teas were £2.85 each this did not add up. When examining the bill they had added cake we had not had and charged over £8 for the 2 additional teas. We should have been wary when another customer had wished us good luck as he left and my mother-in-law said she had received poor service the day before. We will not be going back and would not recommend this place to as anybody.

When booking this accomodation I mimissed that the house was actually a house AND garden(s).
I had assumed that the garden4s were nearby, and was looking forward to seeing them - but to have our room opening on to the gardens was a real treat.
And oh! what gardens they are!!!
Several (secret) gardens, and beautifully laid out.
If you are looking for a fine old English house, with beautifully (restored gardens (Luytens), this is the place.
And ALL the staff are extremely friendly and helpful.

10/10.
