As a 'maturish' hardworking couple we were really looking forward to a well deserved long weekend with much needed relaxation was very nearly destroyed by Booking.com. who took and confirmed our 3 nights booking for a Shepherd Neame hotel The Botany Bay in Broadstairs Kent only for us to find upon arrival the hotel was closed for refurbishments and Booking.com had been advised of the closure months beforehand with a request to be removed from their site until it reopened, despite this the Botany Bay Hotel remained on the availability listings.
We arrived late on the Fri' evening only to be told there was no accommodation; the hotel was closed. Booking.com were telephoned by the Manager and we spoke to a pretty ineffective, useless, and unhelpful salesperson, eventually we were passed onto a 'Supervisor' who in turn washed her hands of the situation and practically abandoned us. At this point and in the middle of the private Shepherd Neame staff 'pre launch' party we found several members of staff prepared to put aside their time and help find us another place to stay within the region. They were brilliant and after much talk and I am sure juggling around eventually found us a beautiful room at the sister (not too far away) Bell Hotel sandwich. We arrived exhausted and quite upset but the staff at the hotel warmly welcomed us and did everything in their power to settle us comfortably. We stayed in this wonderful hotel for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We would like to say a massive thank you to all the staff in the Bell and Botany Bay Shepherd Neame hotels who rescued us from what could have been a disaster. The Bell Inn is warm, friendly, has great double beds, comfortable hotel, that has a great menu, and is ideally located for visitors to explore the area. The staff were fantastic.
Finally, much, much later on, during the evening of arrival Booking.com telephoned to excitedly tell us what a wonderful job they had done saving our weekend by booking us into a Premier Inn in Margate, miles away from where we wanted to be, twin bedded, full of partying young people, no breakfast or restaurant or parking. They could not understand our disgust and disdain as 'after all it was just as good if not better than the hotel we had originally booked'!!
So, be aware of the Booking.com website but do try the Bell Hotel Sandwich, we shall definitely be booking The Botany Bay in Broadstairs for a stay on the near future too! Thank you to Shepherd Neame for the wonderful customer service.

I have stayed at this hotel many times over the past couple of months. I dont normally write reviews but I am compelled to write one for The Bell. From the check in at reception to the restuarant service to the standard of the rooms the service is excellent. This is made all the more professional by Dan the barman. Even at the busiest times when he cant get to you straight away he always acknowledges your presence, remembers your name and what you drink.
Will always recommend The Bell @ Sandwich.

The room was Great, tray of tea coffee biscuits a welcome extra, restaurant service was great and food amazing. Drinks very reasonable prices. Only argument was that there were a couple of minor cleanliness issues that detracted from the stay and could have been easily rectified. ..... ring marks on work tops and carpets and damp marks on walls etc.
Overall, very pleasant stay and would come back again.

We have stayed now for 3 years in a run, every time the staff make the stay relaxed and just what we need. We love the decor of the rooms especially rooms 1,2,and 3. Love the newly refurbished bar and the food is spot on. Thank you all for making our yearly break away from the real world something to look forward too.

We stayed here for a family wedding last week and I could not fault this hotel. We have 3 children so stayed in a family room which was just perfect. Enough room for us all, comfy beds and we even found an xbox in the drawer for the children.
The staff were all ready friendly and accommodating of our young children. The breakfast was also lovely. Huge choice of juices and pastries and then a full English or other hot options. I would not hesitate to stay here again and would recommend to any families.

2 of my wonderful girlfriends and I went away for the weekend and stayed at the Bell Hotel. The town is quaint and quiet but this hotel was the hit! The décor was clean and modern, wonderful beds, water and coffee in the rooms and lovely bathroom amenities. We ended up having lunch, breakfast and then lunch the next day here because of the quality of the food and the staff! From the front of house to Jimmy from Scotland who manages the property, we felt right at home. I would highly recommend this to couples, friends or families.

Room Tip: We stayed on the side where the Greek restaurant is - we had a few late night plates crashing but it...

We stayed at the Bell Hotel on Saturday 1st March. This was a last minute thing and we were unsure what to expect. It was wonderful not only did they upgrade us but the lovely Anita on reception bent over backwards to cater for our every whim!! The upgraded room was beautiful however we then decided to upgrade to a suite again no trouble. On booking we included the eveining meal however on arrival we decided to walk around and do our own thing.Cancelling the evening meal was no problem for Anita all done no fuss.
On check out we booked another weekend however upon arrival home a checking our diaries I had to change the date twice!! This was all done by Anita with no fuss can't wait to go back. evening meal looked great wished we had eaten in
Thank you Anita
