As a 'maturish' hardworking couple we were really looking forward to a well deserved long weekend with much needed relaxation was very nearly destroyed by Booking.com. who took and confirmed our 3 nights booking for a Shepherd Neame hotel The Botany Bay in Broadstairs Kent only for us to find upon arrival the hotel was closed for refurbishments and Booking.com had been advised of the closure months beforehand with a request to be removed from their site until it reopened, despite this the Botany Bay Hotel remained on the availability listings.
We arrived late on the Fri' evening only to be told there was no accommodation; the hotel was closed. Booking.com were telephoned by the Manager and we spoke to a pretty ineffective, useless, and unhelpful salesperson, eventually we were passed onto a 'Supervisor' who in turn washed her hands of the situation and practically abandoned us. At this point and in the middle of the private Shepherd Neame staff 'pre launch' party we found several members of staff prepared to put aside their time and help find us another place to stay within the region. They were brilliant and after much talk and I am sure juggling around eventually found us a beautiful room at the sister (not too far away) Bell Hotel sandwich. We arrived exhausted and quite upset but the staff at the hotel warmly welcomed us and did everything in their power to settle us comfortably. We stayed in this wonderful hotel for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We would like to say a massive thank you to all the staff in the Bell and Botany Bay Shepherd Neame hotels who rescued us from what could have been a disaster. The Bell Inn is warm, friendly, has great double beds, comfortable hotel, that has a great menu, and is ideally located for visitors to explore the area. The staff were fantastic.
Finally, much, much later on, during the evening of arrival Booking.com telephoned to excitedly tell us what a wonderful job they had done saving our weekend by booking us into a Premier Inn in Margate, miles away from where we wanted to be, twin bedded, full of partying young people, no breakfast or restaurant or parking. They could not understand our disgust and disdain as 'after all it was just as good if not better than the hotel we had originally booked'!!
So, be aware of the Booking.com website but do try the Bell Hotel Sandwich, we shall definitely be booking The Botany Bay in Broadstairs for a stay on the near future too! Thank you to Shepherd Neame for the wonderful customer service.
