“best view of the harbour”
Reviewed 16 May 2013

A great pub with rooms above with a brilliant view of the harbour. You can lie in bed and watch the boats coming in and going out. Food is good, hotel is clean and the staff are lovely. My only regret was that I didn't save enough space to try their home made deserts. The rooms are not that big but they are super cheap.

The Duke of Cumberland is in a great spot in the heart of Whitstable. Room 6 has a double and a single bed and is big enough to still feel spacious. High ceiling, freshly decorated in whites and cream with large window over Harbour St and small one with a view straight down the High St. Smart Ikea furniture, tea and coffee, tv, en suite bath with shower over. All very fresh and clean and a nice firm mattress on the bed. We stayed for Saturday night and were given a key to the back door. Very good as we were attending a party in town and got back at 3am. Breakfast served 8 to 10 in the big back room with its eclectic trendy mix of odd old chairs and tables. Breakfast was excellent, my partner had the full English and they made a great vegetarian version for me which was huge. Lashings of tea kept coming. The staff are efficient and friendly. The perfect place to stay if you don't want either a hotel or a small B&B - strikes the perfect balance. Great value. Will definitely be staying again.

We spent one night here, from the time we arrived it was faultless, the staff were
Friendly and helpful everything you could want was provided. In the room and the hotel restaurant
Was fabulous, James was front of house and looked after us brilliantly! There s no menu the tapas just keeps on coming until you say no more! All the dishes were lovely and my husband wanted a steak rather than tapas and James arranged for a steak to be cooked for him. It WA an unforgettable experience, well done to the opulent who took this hotel on eighteen months ago and are working hard to make it a success

The room was very nice and we had a good sleep. The hosts were pleasant and helpful. The breakfast was huge and good. The room amenities which included a hot pot to prepare the provided tea, hot chocolate and coffee were complete. The only caveat...the hotel is at the intersection of two small but busy streets so if you are not an early riser ask for an upper floor maybe or the quietest room. Our room had a lovely view of two small quaint steets in Whitstable but activity started pretty early. Worked for us. The harbor and docks are just a couple of blocks and the area has many restaurants.

After reading the reviews on here I was slightly anxious about this hotel. However I was very pleasantly surprised. The staff seem to have a very hands off approach, the check in took about 1 minute and was very calm and relaxed. We were told that the check out was 11am but they said that as it was very quiet that it wasn't very strict. The hotel is above a pub, which although we could hear the music when we went to bed, wasn't unpleasant, and the fact that we could just wander downstairs for a drink was very convenient. It wasn't the most luxurious hotel in the world but very comfortable and relaxed and reasonably priced (£80 for a standard double room)

The next morning we had the breakfast which was very nice and enjoyable and relaxed. The pub is right in the heart of the highstreet, so central that we initially missed it! It is about 30 seconds from the harbour which is beautiful and the weather was lovely. The town is lovely and we had an excellent time, would highly recommend.

Room Tip: We had room 4 which was a standard double, very nice room.
