We stayed at the Hotel Continental as a last minute trip out of London - it was the only place available at short notice and it's easy to see why. Our room, though clean, badly needed redecorating and the toilet was broken and permanently running.

We thought our check out was 12pm (it wasn't clearly specified) so had a leisurely morning. At 11am the hotel staff started banging on the door shouting & telling us to get out immediately without any prior warning. The man kept trying to come into the room even though I wasn't dressed. We asked for 10 minutes to quickly get ready as we didn't realise check out was 11 but they continued to keep phoning the room and banging on the door rushing us to get out. None of the other rooms on our floor had been cleaned yet so there was no need to hurry us and the way they went about it was extremely rude. We've stayed in a lot of hotels all over the world and never experienced rudeness like that.

Spent two days at the Continental Hotel in Whitstable this week, it was a perfect break. The staff are lovely and willing, the bed was extremely comfortable and the bathroom spotless and spacious. We had a view overlooking the sea, what a treat. Breakfast was very good too, with cereal, fruit, cooked breakfast and toast. Thank you Hotel Continental for being a really excellent hotel, don't change anything we loved it.

On a fit of nostalgia we booked one night at the Continental staying Friday 9th August. We used to own a beach hut at Tankerton and would call into the Continental for a bottle of wine or light meal. As we booked at the last minute we were not surprised that they could only fit us in for one night but as the room had a sea view and was £135 for the night we expected something nice.

Room 3 has a sea view - but that's about all it has going for it. As a previous reviewer said , scuffed walls, black grout in the bathroom, layers of dust and grime on the bathroom plumbing, grubby and stained covers on the two armchairs, dead flies on the carpet, dirty valance on the bed - shall I go on? I could!

No - we did not complain to the management - the problems would have taken more than a couple of hours to resolve - did we want a reduction on price? No just value for the money we had paid . What hotel at this price doesn't have a hair dryer in the bathroom now?

Dinner in the restaurant - in a seaside hotel? Guess what the menu is the same as the bar menu - no specials baguettes and burgers included. I chose the prawn salad - tiny frozen prawns in purchased Marie Rose sauce - very disappointing . Especially for those who came in after 9..00 to be told the restaurant was closed. Choose to eat elsewhere!

Complain to the management ? Few of the staff were over 18 - would they have understood our disappointment? I doubt it.

No we have never stayed at the Savoy but we have stayed at 3,4 and 5 star hotels the world over - expect the same standard as a Travelodge or stay elsewhere .

Room Tip: Try the Marine Hotel at Tankerton

Having read some of the reviews left by some previous residents I was amazed they must be used to staying at the savoy
The continental in the heart of whitstable is a great place to stay on arrival the staff were helpful and friendly, the room with its kingside bed was clean and comfortable with the facility to make tea and coffee in the room
The breakfast was great with the choice of a full English, cereal , fruit ,toast with jam or marmalade , tea coffee and fruit juices wa s terrific value and should you wish to dine in in the evening a fantastic selection of good meals are available from the hotels restaurant all in all to rate it out of ten you would have to give it ten like Whitstable it's a great place to stay.

Had one night here as the Fisherman's Huts were full....sea view balcony was a stunning view, bed was comfy, staff were friendly. The bathroom was awful, mould, shower head hanging off, water permanently leaking from the base of the bath tap. The room was basic beyond belief (more like a youth hostel) there was a rod sticky out the wall for a wardrobe! Breakfast was dry as it had sat under hot lamps. Hotel has a lot of potential but boy does it need some TLC - I'd start with the outside light that is precariously swinging in the sea breeze (above the 'continental' part of the sign at the top of the building!), a claim waiting to happen!

Stayed over a weekend for a specialoccassion as we love the town and have meant to spend a weekend for some time. It is a little outside the main town, but we found parking easy (think we may have been a bit lucky)

Upgraded to a balcony sea view room on booking (about £130?) and although you don't get that much by way of facilities for this, the view is worth the effort alone. It was a cold March weekend and there was still snow on the ground. The Thames estuary is rarely one of God's most thoughtfully put together natural features but a brisk walk along to the Tankerton slopes rewards with a bleak but fresh inhale of sea air.

Wouldn't go quite so far as to call it quintessentially British, but it did have a nice charm about it.

icing on the cake for me was the offer of fresh kippers for breakfast which were cooked to order and plated to the table.

Depends what you want really. You can stay in the area for quite a bit less, and its not on the doorstep of Whitstable's shopping area. But if a quiet break full of R&R and a scenic view are what you're after, I probably couldn't suggest better.

Room Tip: Get a balcony room and ask for kippers at breakfast!

We came down for my niece's weekday afternoon wedding & booked in to this Hotel.

Warned in advance that rooms would not normally be available, as we were travelling 130 miles, found that for a fee, rooms can be available to you from 12:00 (helps to ask ;-0 ).

Reception was great, including a brief tour of the downstairs of the hotel. Our room was clean, crisp sheets, spotless bath room, and a great sea view from the balcony. (room 10).

Can't speak for the dinner, as we didn't eat here, but the self service breakfast was fresh cooked and plentiful - great sausages !!

All staff that we met were friendly and helpful, nothing too much trouble.

A refurbishment programme is underway, with no undue impact on guests. Very glad to say that this is not a coach holiday destination!

Highly recommended, and I will definitely be going back.

Room Tip: Try to get a sea view room with a balcony !
