“Beautiful setting”
Reviewed 21 October 2007

We have just returned from a wedding at the Hotel. We stayed overnight and agree with all the previous comments. The Hotel is set in beautiful grounds. The staff were very helpful and polite. Unfortunately the rooms still have not been refurbished and some are quite shabby. Ours was a decent size, but the rooms that my son and daughter stayed in were very small for double rooms. The shower over the bath was not very powerful. We were in room 37, which was directly above the bar and was very noisy. However the public areas were lovely along with the lounge, which was very comfortable.
The food was very good. If it does have a refurbishment, it will be a lovely place for a weekend break.

The setting of this location is impressive, surrounded by countryside, and driving up to the hotel, the building is very grand and imposing.

Once inside the staff are fautless in dealing withg guests. My only gripe is that the decor is rather tired, and really needs a bit of a refurbishment. My room was on the shabby side, and the communal areas look a bit dusty and shabby in parts. Shame really - with some imagination this place could be stunning. However, for £35.00pn for B and B, the price compensates.

We were two couples (aged 50+) who spent a two day New Year break there. The management, staff and the food were first class.
The house and grounds are magnificent and the hotel is well placed for travel from any point and to local attractions.
Accommodation is a little tired but under new ownership there is a promise to upgrade. Faded decadence was a phrase used by another guest! We had a great time. People seem to return again and we will.

  • Liked — The staff and the grandeur.
  • Disliked — Nothing.
  • Tips/Secrets — Check where they are with the upgrade and if there is any building work underway.

We stayed just for one night to celebrate my wifes birthday. I have to say the clientele was from the older end of the spectrum but ok. The food was simple ingredients cooked well, with just enough special touches.
The room was lovely and the staff pleasant and courteous. I took advantage of the free fishing beat ( no luck). all in all a pleasant experience - very three star and none the worse for that.

We stayed here on our honeymoon just for one night on our way up to Scotland. The hotel itself stands in its own grounds and the exterior is magnificant - it looks like the backdrop for a film set. The communal areas of the hotel have plenty of old charm and original features - roaring log fires, beautiful wood panelling and double width staircases. There is a silver service dining room where the staff couldn't do enough for us, and the food was excellent. The mistake we made was to take advantage of a very cheap online deal. There is definitely a separate set of rooms for anyone staying there at a budget rate. Our room was disappointing - we had a soft bed, cheap furniture and bathroom with a coloured suite and peeling wallpaper - it was in much need of updating. We would definitely return but pay more and take advantage of the true luxury this hotel has to offer by staying in one of the luxury rooms or suites.
