“A great base for exploring Bowland”
Reviewed 27 October 2009

Together with a group of friends, we booked two nights at the Post House in October as part of a walking holiday in the Forest of Bowland. It’s in an excellent location is in the centre of the pretty town of Clitheroe about two minutes walk from trains and buses. Parking at the rear is a bit tight although there is a public car park close by where cars can be left free of charge overnight.

Our bedroom was at the rear of the building and very quiet and comfortable with a well equipped bathroom and adequate storage space. Breakfast consisted of buffet style cereals, juices, fresh fruit etc followed by any variation of the full cooked English breakfast which was prepared to order. It was more than enough to set us up for the day. The hotel will also prepare sandwiches for a picnic lunch on request at a very reasonable price.

Dinner was excellent and included an interesting selection of local Lancashire dishes as well as the more usual fare. I can particularly recommend the steak pudding, a local delicacy that I hadn’t tried for many years. The wine list was of good quality as was the locally produced Moorhouses beer available on hand pump.

All this is presided over by the affable Roger who is living proof that the spirit of Les Dawson is alive and well. At £160 for dinner, bed and breakfast for two people for two nights, the Post House was excellent value for money and we would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to visit this beautiful but relatively undiscovered part of the world.

Stayed here for just the one night in a double room as we were attending a hotel at near by eaves hall the following day and couldn't get a room at eaves the night before. Lovely hotel, warm welcome from Roger, nice room with flat screen TV, spacious bathroom totally exceeded my expectations from this 2 star hotel. Good value for food in the evening. Roger kindly let us use a single room next door to freshen up before the wedding - single room equally as lovely as the double and perfect for solo travellers. We stayed at the 3 star eaves hall the following night at double the price and wish we had booked the Old Post House for the 2 nights instead! Many thanks again.

The hotel was a find. Situated in the centre of Clitheroe. Ample parking at the rear. First impressions were very welcoming and relaxing. The whole hotel was very clean. The room was large, comfortable, clean. New digital, flat screen tv, large range of teas and coffees. Bathroom, large, clean with probably the biggest bath towels I have seen. A good, decent shower with plenty of hot water.
The food was divine ( I believe it was cooked by the partner) prices were excellent. Drinks were normal price, not the usual hotel inflated prices. The service was attentive without being overbearing
We had planned a walking break in the Forest of Bowland. The owner supplied us with maps and his local knowledge was invaluable.
Why can't all hotels be like this?

Made a late booking by telephone for a night away, arrived three hours later and was warmly welcomed by a great host, who had plenty of good, honest advice on where to go and what to do locally. Good rooms and a great (veggie) breakfast that set us up for a day's walking.

This traditional hotel in the heart of the quiet Lancashire town of Clitheroe is a bit of a hidden jewel. In comparison to the other hotels in the area I was expecting budget accommodation with a grand name but I was very pleasantly surprised.
The room was slightly cramped but well equipped: kettle, selection of teas, hot chocolate, coffee for a cafetière, trouser press, digital TV and a whole host of freebies.
Yes there was a little mould and damage in the bathroom but this can be forgiven by the number of towels that are provided.
The range on offer for breakfast was as vast as I had come to expect after seeing the various items in the room. Tea, coffee, juices, cereals, fruit and about 8 items on the menu including the classic Full English.
All in all, the staff like the facilities were very pleasant and the various options available made the place feel much more expensive than it actually cost.

Friendly welcome on a wet night. Room was fine, except for a plug-in fragrance generator that made my eyes water. Easy to rectify! All clean and tidy with a very good breakfast. Good value. Would stay again.
