Owner description: A visit to Ashby Castle makes a great family day out in Leicestershire. The property began as a manor house in the 12th century and reached castle status in the 15th century. Come and find out about the castle’s colourful history with our lively audio tour. Hear how Edward IV’s Chamberlain Lord Hastings added the chapel and the impressive keep-like Hastings Tower – a castle within a castle. Visitors can still climb the tower today despite it suffering massive damage during the Civil War. There are great views from the top! Then make sure you discover the underground passage from the kitchen to the tower, probably created during this war, which can still be explored today. Don't Miss •Walk the underground passage between the tower and the kitchen •Be amazed that you can still climb to the top of the half ruined tower •Find out more about the castle's dramatic history in the company of our amusing audio guide Last admission is half an hour before closing.

Enjoyed a lovely couple of hours here last weekend, reasonable price to get in, enjoyed climbing the tower and walking through the secret tunnel although the tunnel was a bit eerie! For a Saturday afternoon the place was very quiet with visitors which was nice, and we had a nice picnic on the grass and enjoyed the sun. The audio guide was free which was good, but was a bit annoying after a while, would have been a problem if we'd paid for it! Overall a nice way to spend an afternoon in Ashby in a beautiful setting.

“Nice way to kill a few hours on a sunny day!”
Reviewed 25 July 2012

Spent an afternoon here last Sunday. Took the free audio tour which takes you various position around the ruins and explains the life and times. Very informative and quite comical in places. Had an ice cream from the shop which was fab. Very enjoyable, relaxing, not too many people, plenty of grass to sit and have a picnic if you bring your own food. Would be lovely if they had a little tea room or something but I don't suppose they get enough visitors. Parking is very limited (probably no more than 10 spaces) but some people just stayed a little while so the turnover of cars is pretty quick. They have a tower you can climb and my b/f loved this.

“Pleasant way to spend a couple of hours”
Reviewed 10 July 2012

The castle ruins are well kept and signed with just enough information. The audio guide is a tad irritating but overall entertaining and informative, good for children. good value and the staff were pleasant and welcoming. Small gift shop. No tea room but there are a number on the High Street.
