“Great Place to Visit”

Although its not going to take you a whole day, the Castle ruin is well worth a visit and has spooky underground passages to explore. The grounds are a perfect place for a picnic and there are outdoor evening performances during summer. If you are visiting the area it would be a good idea to combine this with somewhere like Ashby museum, Conkers or Moira Furnace museum.

“Ashby De La Zouch Castle”

Very surprised as first impressions were not that good. I was pleasantly surprised as the castle has many interesting and unique features, exposed fireplaces , underground tunnels and stone masonry features. Well worth a visit

“Lovely castle ruins”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 April 2014

We visited as 4 late-20s adults: on a cold, windy Sunday for some silly reason! Was still lovely to wander round, even though very cold!
The free audio tour wasn't for us, aimed at younger audiences. I bought a guidebook for about a fiver which was very good and gave similar information in a bit more detail. It was really interesting to see how the castle would have been- especially the way they showed the tower with (I think I remember correctly but don't quote me!) separate servants' quarters and a hidden room with no door which could only have been accessed through a hidden hatch!
As others have said, the most memorable bits were the climb to the top of the tower (a good view any time of the year but if you're lucky enough to have a warmer winter day then the bare leaves allow you to see even more!) and the tunnel which even at 32 my boyfriend loved going through a few too many times!
Spent a good couple of hours looking around before heading off to a nearby pub to warm up!
Another tip: your ticket to Ashby Castle gives you free access to Ashby Museum on the same day.

“Enjoyable hour or so.”

Visited today with a teenager and a five year old. Lots of room for them to run around. Highlights were the climb to the top of the tower and the underground tunnel. Ok for a short visit.
