my husband booked a night for the 13th february for valentines for me ,they offered him the 4 poster room for a little extra price .on arrival he was told there was a problem and they gave him another room and werent to eager on paying the extra money back .
we went into the room it was freezing there was a radiator which we switched up full and a electric radiator which we also put on ,it warmed slightly but the bathroom was cold all night .the duvet was lumpy and nothink in places we had to use a big blanket. the breakfast was nice but i was very dissapointed as we stayed here on our wedding night 10 yrs ago and it was lovely then .

Room smelt of stale smoke ( even though non smoking room)- stains on carpet - grubby net curtains and bathroom seemed more like a public amenity than an ensuite (very basic and plain). Soap was wrapped but was stuck to tray so not sure how long it had been there. Also, choice of food for evening was disappointing and it was hard to find a healthy snack.

The hotel looked as if it has not long been redecorated and considering the age of the hotel it had been decorated well. The room was clean and comfortable with a modern bathroom.
We were tired so rather than go and look for somewhere in Ashby we stayed and had the carvery which was good without being anything special.
The breakfast was a help yourself buffet and lacked a fried or poached egg but overall OK.
It was excellent value for money, the staff were friendly, helpful and down to earth, on the whole it was a good experience.
Bed and breakfast and a two course carvery with a decent bottle of wine for two people for £96!

There are no words to describe how tired and run down this hotel is! Rooms need a major re-fit and the hotel in general needs an overhaul as paint is chipped and peeling throughout, damp patches on the ceiling amongst other things. Another thing that needs an overhaul is the joke of a manager called John. Don't know where you got him from but I would send him back - rude, unhelpful, greasy hair and stank of boiled vegetables which really isn't pleasant. Don't think he smiled once and how he speaks to staff and customers is appalling. On the plus side the receptionists were all delightful and Charles the night porter was an asset to you even though he looks scary. Will not be staying again or recommending to anyone unless the hotel has a major re-vamp. I was going to stay again for a friends wedding this Summer but have now moved my booking to The Premier Inn. Shame as your hotel could be excellent if you tried a bit harder

A round of drinks in the bar, four main courses, a bottle of wine and 3 coffees and a bill for £78. The Royal is an old fashioned provincial hotel with warm and friendly service. The food however is old fashioned provincial which is not so appealing. Overcooked chewy beef with tired veg was poor and the carvery counter also appeared to be used to dispense staff meals which devalued the experience for the paying customer.

We asked for an early check in following an 18 hour flight and on arrival we were delighted to find our wishes was granted. We enjoyed a very tasty carvery in the newly decorated dining room, great value at £4.99 and to be served by a smiling, friendly waitress was the icing on the cake.

Our room was on the top floor, nice and quiet with a very comfy bed which we were reluctant to leave. The full English breakfast made getting up worth while though and we enjoyed sitting at a table overlooking the garden.

The location of the hotel is perfect, backing onto open ground and a short walk into the town.

A really nice hotel but it's biggest asset is it's warm and friendly staff who can't do enough for you. We'll definitely be back.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room.

My wife and i were due to stay at this hotel for one night over the weekend. The receptionist was very nice and helpful upon our arival and as other comments mention the reception area was ok. However when we got to our room overlooking the car park, we found it looking very tired indeed and in urgent need of modernisation . One of the windows had dropped and would not stay closed leaving a permenant icey cold breeze coming in. The radiator was on what appeared to be its maximum but was only barely warm so we put the portable oil filled radiator that was also in the room on. The room was very spacious which seemed great until i realised the heater was never going to warm the room to a temperature that was anywhere near comfortable. Two mins in the shower saw the water run cold, followed by 1 and a half hours in bed fully clothed to try to keep warm was more that i could bear. I paid the bill, checked out and found another hotel nearby that was modern, warm and comfortable. Its very sad that such a beautiful old building was looking in such a bad condition. In total i stayed there approx. 2 hours for the cost of a night although that in fairness was my choice as i could of complained, but in truth just wanted to get my wife and i out of there asap.
