“True English Village Escape”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 March 2014 for a stay in February 2014

My wife and I were visiting family and have tended to stay for a few days in B&B's (traveling in from overseas). As we were staying a little bit longer, we decided to try renting a place so we could "spread out" a bit. What a treasure we found in Stathern! All the comforts of home (and I mean ALL.!!) in a quite, village in central England. Beautifully kept, clean, warm (it WAS February!!) with full kitchen, washer/dryer facilities and satellite TV and Internet. Plus...2 pubs in the village that serve food and a small shop for everything else....all within walking distance. Cannot give them anything but the highest marks !!! Thank You for a wonderful vacation!

“A HOME AWAY FROM HOME”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 October 2013 for a stay in October 2013

My husband, my friend and I needed a place to be "home base" while we visited family and also toured England and Scotland. We also needed it to be close to Melton Mowbray. This beautiful cottage in the charming village of Stathern was the perfect fit. Only about six miles from Melton it was an easy drive drive to and from town.

The cottage had lots of space, a modern bath and kitchen and was nicely decorated. Upon arrival we were treated by Felicity who had thought of everything, had coffee, bread and milk for us so that we would not have to worry about getting to a market after flying all night. She even had fresh flowers and a bottle of wine to welcome us.

After traveling up to Scotland for 4 days and 3 nights we welcomed coming back to "The Cottage" as my husband put it, "It feels like coming home."

I would highly recommend this lovely cottage and it's amenities for anyone wanting a weekend away or a few weeks depending on your needs. We plan to return in the next year and hope to be able to stay here once again.

“Perfect cottage, generous hosts in an idyllic English village”

I asked Felicity, who runs both a bed and breakfast and a cottage rental on her property, if she'd like a review on Tripadvisor. Felicity was such a wonderful hostess and the cottage was so absolutely perfect that truthfully, I would rather keep it a secret. But she said she would like a review, so I feel I should write one.
Garden Cottage Escapes is located in a lovely and tiny town in the British Midlands called Stathern. There are two pubs, The Plough is very welcoming and hosts locals, and The Red Lion is kind of superb, the food and atmosphere are both fantastic. In fact, the owners of The Red Lion own another pub near Stamford that has a Michelin Star. They're not kidding around.
There is also a small convenience store, a butcher, post office and perfect little church surrounded by tilted Victorian graves. Stathern is probably 15 minutes or so from Melton Mowbray, where there are super markets and food take away etc. Stathern is 30 to 40 minutes or so from Nottingham, and 30 minutes from Stamford which is town to the south not to be missed. Newark is also close by, so it's easy to get to the Newark Antique Fair!
We arranged to stay for two weeks in the cottage. Felicity told us that Sainsbury's would deliver food if you ordered online, so we ordered an assortment of goodies and the house was stocked when we arrived. Felicity had provided wonderful lemon tea cake and fresh eggs and fruits also. The kitchen is as well equipped as any home kitchen, with an oven, stove, dishwasher, food processer, blender, a full set of dishes and dishes for children. Our last day in Stathern we hosted our family for a meal and there were plenty of dishes and pots with which to cook.
We travelled with our 18 month old son. When we arrived Felicity had provided a travel crib, and lots and lots of toys for Eli to play with. We'd also ordered a toy or two from Amazon UK and she had received them before we arrived. The open plan of the cottage downstairs was great for our toddler.
The cottage is two stories, two bedrooms upstairs, a toilet and sink upstairs and a full bathroom downstairs. There is a towel warmer, and the heat in the house can be turned on a will so you can keep it nice and toasty. I'm from California so I do like having the house warm. We did our laundry in the washing machine daily, put it in the provided laundry bag and ran it across the gravel path to Felicity's house and left it on her porch, she dried it and folded it and returned it the next morning. On the day Felicity came to change our sheets, she noticed that we had tucked a quilt around the window in our little boys room, so it would be darker. When we came back that afternoon she had arranged for a black out shade! What can I say, it can't get any nicer than that.
The gardens outside have apple trees and lavender bushes. Our little boy loved picking the apples and petting the resident cat. There is a TV, a DVD player, and ipod dock. Felicity has a selection of films and the little store in the village has movies you can rent.
We enjoyed our stay so much that I called the local real estate agent to inquire about homes for sale! And I cannot think of anything that would've made our visit to the cottage any more perfect.

Liked best: Everything was so beautifully presented. The cottage, the gardens, even the cat coordinated with the paint!
