“Excellent home cooked food”
Reviewed 31 December 2011

Having heard good reports from friends, we decided to give the Smisby Arms a try. A small car park leads up to the entrance to the pub; as we entered we were met with the warmth from a fantastic open fire – a good start. The eating area is multi-tiered and is adjacent to well-stocked bar, a good variety of beers, spirits and wine were on offer. The whole place had a homely feel and was decorated tastefully with seasonal snowman and tinsel. The menu is a vast one and there was a specials board too! All the dishes looked tempting from the sea bass curry to the shredded chilli beef, the choice was a difficult one. Opting to skip the starter, in hindsight a wise idea, the portions were huge. I opted for the Smisby Chicken – chicken with mushrooms, bacon and prawns in a tomato sauce, delightful. My wife had the equally impressive haddock and broccoli bake with a cheddar cheese sauce. Both came with a massive bowl of chips and peas, you could have had potatoes and vegetables instead. Portion sizes to sate most appetites.

Feeling extremely full, it was a tough choice whether to go for a pudding, but I decided on the Chocolate Brownies and Vanilla ice cream. Again two largish brownies but very light, with a rich creamy ice cream, a great dessert.

Overall a great meal, good service and best of all, the food is homemade, we will return!

“Absolutely superb!”
Reviewed 13 October 2011

We've just returned home from a fantastic meal at The Smisby Arms and I felt compelled to let people know how great it is!

There was a fantastic variety on the menu and specials board; I could have eaten any of it! There was a comment that said that the vegetarian selection was limited - well they've definitely rectified that.

Lovely staff too - all very friendly and bubbly.

“Consistently good quality food”
Reviewed 15 September 2011

We have visited with friends and family on several occasion. This is a well run country pub which provides excellent food. The steaks are alway cooked as ordered ie. rare or medium rare, which is a simple thing that many pubs get wrong, and the trimmings, and home made chips are also excellent. We have tried many dishes from the menu and the specials board and have yet to be disppointed. Our only 'complaint' is that the portions are so generous that we rarely fit in a dessert.
Friendly and efficient service. Can get busy on fridays and saturdays so worth booking.

“Very good country food pub, great chef, lovely home cooked food. Quite small and family run so not always perfect but that's why”
Reviewed 2 September 2011

Food unbeatable for a small country pub. Always fresh and well cooked. Lovely chips! Doesn't pretend to be a gourmet veggie restaurant so last review a bit unfair. Popular so at times you might find it hard to get a table, lots of regulars come back time and again. One of it's qualities is that on top of the food it remains a good village drinking pub, hope they manage to keep this up!
