“Not on your nelly!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 February 2012

I stayed at this hotel in January for a week, never again! The food was un-substantial, rooms old fashioned and my room was particularly cold! I thought the price they were charging was well overpriced and as for the propriotor and his wife, were do i begin? He is so arrogant and rude and she is as nutty as a fruit cake, reminded me of Fawlty Towers!

Concerning the reviewer’s observations:

1) The building is a100 year old Edwardian building converted into a hotel and so it is 'old fashioned'. We have retained much of its original Edwardian character and did not indulge in architectural vandalism during the building’s conversion into a full hotel.

2) With regards to other comments, I would ask reviewers to look at past reviews e.g see previous review, “Astonishingly friendly Hotel”.and also note that we are still ranked number 1 of 7 hotels in the area.

3) Considering the location, this reviewer chose to stay in this hotel and so the fact that the location did not suit the reviewer is entirely due to the reviewrs own 'location' choice. I presume the reviewer initially checked our location.

4) Finally, the hotel finds some of the comments about certain staff 'offensive'.

Just stopped two nights on Business and all the usual Grimbsy hotels were full, so was booked in here. Very Friendly hotel, food was filling and well cooked (and loads of it). Now I've read the other reviews I wish I'd got up earlier for the breakfasts, they sound great. Next time I'm up here I'll try and get in here rather than the usual ones booked by my Company

What a gem of a find! Had a short stay for a reunion and it couldn't have been in a more perfect spot. The accommodation was fantastic with large, spacious, warm and clean rooms that were full of goodies - sweets, toiletries, a hospitality tray - amazing attention to detail and comfort - a rare thing in this day and age. The bed was sooooo big and comfortable zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!! The owner was friendly and helpful and served a fabulous breakfast. The choice was exceptional with the English breakfast or haddock etc. Amazing value.
Remembering this is in November when it is low season, everywhere was ready for business without looking like dust sheets had been taken off to accommodate us. Do not know how anybody can dis such a fabulous little find - the only thing is that if you survive on McD's breakfasts then that says a lot for your taste!!!!

Will definitely be back again to enjoy the atmosphere, look at all the arabian artifacts, and enjoy the amazing hospitality, comfort and superb breakfast!

Room Tip: They all are of the highest standard

My colleagues and I stay at Clee house roughly four times a year whilst working in the area and I have to say that even though I generally dislike having to stay away on business I actually look forward to staying at this hotel.
We always get a warm welcome and feel instantly at home! The service is excellent. The bar is well stocked and the food, served in the bistro, is absolutely fantastic.
The bedrooms are comfortable, clean and spacious. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided, as well as biscuits and a small bowl of boiled sweets, which is a nice little added extra!
The breakfast is beautifully cooked, and there is also an assortment of cereals and fruit juice should you require a lighter start to the day.
Overall I would say Clee House Hotel makes a nice, refreshing change from staying in the uniform-esque Premier Inns and the like that I usually stay at and I would recommend it instantly to anyone wanting to know of a great place to stay in the Grimsby / Cleethorpes area.

Can't imagine where the last reviewer stayed but it certainly wasn't the Clee House Hotel and Bistro we went to! This place has it all and then some! Breakfast was sumptuous. Coffe was hot fresh and brewed...bacon, eggs, lashings of toast and fresh juice...4* start to the day!
Our room was beautifully appointed, warm cosy and and a treat to relax in. Bed comfortable, great pillows and crisp white linen. I heard NO noise from the other rooms and had a great nights sleep. The shower was enormous, hot and powerful, (my number one indicator of a great hotel!). A plethora of lovely bath products, tea and coffe in the room and everything you would expect such as hair dryer, comfy sofa, flatscreen TV etc.
The Managers Mr.and Mrs Dave were delightful host/hostess and we had a great evening in the bar and a super meal in the Bistro. Very polite waitress and good prices!
Next time you are anywhere near Cleethorpes I suggest you call in...you will be made MOST welcome and we will definitely come here again.

A modern B&B lives or dies on its breakfast and its decor.

Breakfast? They advertise that their eggs come from hens vaccinated against salmonella. Just what you want at breakfast. And they pride themselves on coffee being Nescafe granules. You'll get a better breakfast at the Golden Arches down the road.

The rooms are functional, if you can bear hearing the TV then snoring from 3 different directions.

Fight the contractors in the smoking area adjacent to the front door .... and I'm not going anywhere on the decor ... if you like signs telling you not what to do, then this Is the place for you.

Have stayed in most Grimsby hotels-this, by far, the worst.

I will address each of the issues in turn.

1) Breakfast: The reference to salmonella was put on the Breakfast Menu on the recommendation of the local Food Hygiene Inspector who remarked that many people are concerned about eggs ‘provenance’ in much the same way that they often ask if the eggs are ‘free range’, ‘organic’, etc. The vast majority of residents compliment us on the breakfast – see earlier reviews. ‘Breakfast is very nice too with plenty of choice’.

2) Nescafe granules. This is on the menu as result of people asking what instant coffee we use.

3) The architecture (Edwardian) and layout of the hotel bedrooms is such that you can’t hear noise from 3 directions. And ss per the 3 star criteria, the rooms are more than merely 'functional'.

4) Smoking - Contractors. The Smoking shelter/area/location is as approved by the local authority. Like many establishments, it is in the vicinity of the main entrance. As to contractors, I do not practise smoking apartheid and they are welcome to smoke in the same area as non-contractors

5) Décor. Each to his own taste but I would encourage readers again to look at past reviews e.g. ‘I loved all of the artefacts from their travels abroad as they gave a fun, quirky feel to the hotel and were an excellent talking point’.

6) ‘Signs telling you not what to do’. All relate to smoking, as required by law and/or the disposal of ‘tab’ ends. Sorry, there is one other sign to do with dirty footwear which is a problem with some, not all 'contractors' (dirty/muddy etc workboots).

Negative remarks always concern me but this particular review appears to be 'out of sync' with those of other recent guests.

We stayed here only one night and found the hotel very clean and comfortable. The owners were very friendly and pleasant. I loved all of the artefacts from their travels abroad as they gave a fun, quirky feel to the hotel and were an excellent talking point.
I was slightly concerned that we may suffer traffic noise as our room faced onto a main road, however it was very quiet. The bed was comfortable as were two lovely armchairs provided in the room. The TV was placed a little too high for a plasma screen, so positioning to watch was tricky. However when it was mentioned to David the following morning he thanked us and obviously planned to put it right.
We had a very enjoyable and reasonably priced meal in the Bistro. Served by a very friendly waitress. Do have the homemade lemon cheesecake, it is simply the best I've ever tasted. Breakfast was great, the generous portion of smoked haddock with poached egg was delicious.
This hotel is very good value for money and close to all of the local amenities.
