“Fantastic hotel”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

This was our first visit to this hotel, and it won't be our last, from checking in to checking out, the staff couldn't do enough for us. The hotel was spotless, the room was very clean and comfortable, just couldn't find any faults at all, lovely food, definitely will be staying there again.

My partner booked a room at this hotel recently and specifically asked for a room that was suitable for a wheelchair. We were both disappointed that the room had no apparent modifications for wheelchair users.
The room we were given was about as far away from the lift as possible and meant negotiating three fire doors with the wheelchair, not easy in itself! The furniture in the room had to be moved so that we could get access into the room.
The mirror on the dressing table was offset, so when the chair was moved under the knee-hole, it couldn't be seen. Not a good idea for a lady who takes great care with her appearance!
The bathroom was hampered by the door opening on the wrong side to enable wheelchair access. The sink was too high to be used from a wheelchair and another mirror was out of reach in here. Whilst the bathroom was nice for an able-bodied person, it was awkward and possibly dangerous for a wheelchair user. There were no grab rails next to the toilet and shower, except for a stick-on one (!!) that was really only as much use as a chocolate tea pot. The floor would have benefited from a non-slip surface to aid transfer from the chair to the shower and the toilet.
The hotel brochure boasted of millions of pounds being spent recently on upgrading its rooms and facilities. It is clear that a visit to the Pound Shop to buy a plastic grab-rail was the only concession made to facilitate disabled customers.
It appears that only minimal reference to DDA legislation was made by the owners and contractors when the hotel was refurbished.
My partner and I were looking forward to a romantic stay at this hotel and it would have been perfect if more thought had been given to providing a properly equipped room.
The hotel staff were nice, the issue we had was with the hotel owners who should be able to liaise with disabled groups when they plan upgrades and refurbishments, so that all their customers are satisfied and delighted!

Dear guest
Many thanks for taking the time to give such a constructive review following your recent visit. Please be assured that when plans were made to refurbish the hotel under our new ownership, we were keen to offer some form of Adapted Room, and identified an area which could be developed for this purpose. I appreciate that this room is some distance from the lift and would have been located closer had we been starting with a new build. The majority of fire doors, not on a main stairwell are fitted with door guards, allowing them to remain fixed open for easy access outside the hours of 22.00 hrs. to 8.00 hrs. We will certainly review the position of mirrors and introduce grab rails where possible. I am pleased to confirm that we are now planning to build an extension to the hotel, which will allow us the opportunity to add fully compliant DDA facilities in the future.
Kind regards
Anne

Arriving at the hotel makes you wonder what you've booked. It looks like a 70's hospital block. Surprisingly the hotel is really nice inside and so are the rooms. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Didn't eat apart from breakfast which was also very good. Ask for a room with a balcony!

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony

Dear guest
As a typical example of post war architecture, we know we’re not a particularly pretty building – but well worth a visit inside. Many thanks for your kind comments, praising the interior, rooms, employees and breakfast! Sounds like we’ll hopefully see you again when you are next in the area.
Kind regards

I had booked the one "adapted" room, with my partner, as I have to use a wheelchair. It is on the first floor above the function room. The bedroom and wet-room were both very clean. However, there were no grab rails in the bathroom. A member of staff did provide a small stick-on grab rail which we had to affix ourselves. It was still not adequate to support me for getting on the toilet without help. I had been told on the phone that there were grab rails in the bathroom so I found this very misleading. The mirror above the sink was at standing height so I could see nothing! The mirror at the dressing table was also placed wrongly and not central to where you sit. Small improvements to this room, which is supposed to be suitable for wheelchair users, could make a huge difference.

Room Tip: Adapted Room. If you are in a wheelchair be warned of the lack of grab rails in the bathroom.

We stayed for a night as a treat. We had a lovely time, the bedrooms are very very clean and well appointed. The bar was nice and the breakfast was great. We are vegetarian and they got us some vegetarian sausages not mentioned on the menu which we found very thoughtful.

I booked the Humber so that the family could get together at Christmas and my in-laws only live around the corner. Everything exceeded our expectations. All the staff we came into contact with during our night stay were extremely helpful and friendly. The rooms were very comfortable especially the beds! We are very fussy about our beds and these were so comfortable with lovely white linen. The Christmas dinner was well organised and the food was tasty and hot. The bar and bistro area is comfortable and well decorated. The cooked breakfast is delicious! My husband and son played golf and enjoyed the course. We like it so much, we are returning for Easter for a couple of nights.

Room Tip: If there is a function in the main dining room, choose rooms closer to reception.
