I stayed for three nights at this hotel.
Beautiful decoration in front of hotel in the bar/ coffee area and restaurant.
Sadly wasn't carried through upstairs, although comfortable, the decor was a little tired and in need of updating, very creaky hotel but went with the building, can hear people above and in other rooms which could become irritating, also maids in the morning were really loud while they worked around 8.30/9.00 which I found annoying especially as I wanted to sleep in one morning. The room was of a good standard of hygiene although there were dusty areas and the toilet could do with a good bleach to get rid of stains in the basin.
Generally the staff were extremely helpful and especially our waitress who we had for our evening meal. I decided to have breakfast on my last morning and I thought £12.50 was a little steep for what I received and have paid less for higher standard hotels in London. I felt overall that there were things that let the hotel down a little but on the whole I had a pleasant stay.
My wife and I stayed here for two nights and although we had a reasonably comfortable stay there were a few niggles that might make us think twice about returning.
There were good things about the Admiral Rodney:
-The staff we met were ALL extremely friendly, efficient and helpful in every way ...absolutely no complaints in that department.
-Breakfast was excellent: wide serving window, good service, nice variety of foods available and a cooked option of your choice. Champion...very pleased.
-car parking was secure, ample and private
-evening meal was ok...reasonable choice at reasonable prices and good service.
-iron and ironing board in room...really useful and getting rarer in my experience
However, there were also some annoyances:
-our room was at front, overlooking road, and was quite noisy: if returning I would ask for a room at rear, overlooking courtyard. We had to keep windows tight shut which would have been annoying in hot weather.
-our shower would only provide cold water on first night which was annoying after a long journey. In fairness, it was fixed promptly next morning when we informed reception but I would expect a shower to be working in a hotel of this standard.
-the room decor was a bit 'tired' and the bathroom in particular needed a few bits of modernisation in my view. For example, yellowing plastic taps and an ageing shower curtain that didn't work properly were reminiscent of cheaper hotel chains that I have endured while travelling with my work...not a room advertised as 'executive' that I am using for a rare holiday. Also, the fact that bathroom door had to be kept tight shut so as to prevent fire alarm going off (according to the sign on the wall) was a bit strange.
-the cleaning standard was a bit mixed: ok overall but a few 'missed bits' that annoyed ...for example taps in bathroom were dirty, which I hate. Milk supply wasn't topped up when room was serviced, a fact we didn't notice until we made tea on second morning and didn't have enough milk. These might seem trivial points but this is a hotel advertised at a certain standard...and charging accordingly.
So, overall a good hotel let down by a few irritating faults and in need of a bit of sprucing up.
I would probably stay there again but would look for a rear room and hope that the irritations listed above had been sorted...and that the service and breakfasts were still just as good!
Thank you for your feedback on your stay with us, we always find our customer’s reviews very helpful. We’re glad you had a comfortable stay with us, our staff always aim to provide an exceptional level of service to all our guests and we glad they met your expectations. Unfortunately the rooms at the front of the building do face the road which can be busy at times, we do offer quieter rooms at the rear of the building subject to availability. We are currently in the middle of improvement works to update our bathroom suites and to rectify any issues. We do hope you come back and stay with us soon.
First visit to Horncastle - we were visiting an old friend who has moved there. The staff really went out of their way to make us feel special.
Light and airy restaurant which made for an enjoyable dining experience. Great Sunday lunch menu - £11.95 for 2 courses; £13.95 for 3 courses. We had 2 courses and my elderly mother and her friend had children's portions of the main courses - a nice touch.
Great roasts and vegetables - I had turkey and my wife had the beef. The Yorkshire puddings were a disappointment though - pretty tasteless. The chef should change the recipe.
Overall, a great time was had by all and if we return to Horncastle, we will definitely eat again at the Admiral Rodney.
Thank you for your great review, our whole team always strive to deliver really excellent, friendly service to our valued guests, and we look forward to your next visit.
Had a nice lunch here whilst on a family visit to Horncastle, there was plenty of variety on the lunch time menu, (I had a steak baguette) and the beer choice was also good. The surroundings are modern with comfortable lounger type seating and the staff were polite and attentive.
I would recommend stoping here if your passing through and want a safe option for a quick lunch, I don't think you will be disappointed.
Many thanks for your kind remarks and I am pleased our menu and the ambience of the hotel met with your approval. We do hope to see you again soon.
