“A last minute idea visit the area.”
Reviewed 27 February 2014

The opportunity arose for a few days away from work. The visit was planned on the Sunday for arrival on the Tuesday. On balance a good choice was made. A very welcoming reception including details of internet access. Everything in the room worked as expected. The room was rather cool on arrival but became very warm when occupied. Extra biscuits were provided without a question. The idea of sharing a single packet (one each) was considered frugal. Diner was a delight, good pub food well served in a very pleasant atmosphere. A very comfortable bed ensured a good nights sleep. An excellent breakfast (not rushed) , completed the all to short break. The room above the bar could be noisy for those wishing to retire before the bar closed. Not a problem on our visit. Would return again to sample more of an all to short break.

Room Tip: Note room above the bar could be noisy.

Called in for an evening meal whilst staying at a nearby b&b. The staff were friendly, the bar was busy and the dining area cosy. The service was very efficient, the food was lovely and the price overall not bad. The only downside I could find was that there wasn't a huge selection to chose from on the menu but it wouldn't put me off dining there again.

The Family running the George and Dragon were very accommodating. We were arriving at 4pm after they had finished serving Christmas lunch to a pub full of customers, and were just retiring for their own Christmas dinner. They left us out a lovely spread of cold meats and cheese with mince pies and chocolate. The landlady had taken the trouble to ring me in plenty of time weeks beforehand to say they would not be serving food in the evening and gave us the option to cancel if that did not suit.

Room Tip: Our room had a four poster and power shower in lovely roomy bathroom, but no bath

We stayed here a night during October and enjoyed our evening very much. Of course, it was rather a relief to get off the small winding roads safely and settle down. Our room was fine but where the place excelled was in its food. My husband had a good meal of fish and chips and I had cheese croquettes, They sound quite plain, but were well presented with delicious accompaniments. Breakfast in the morning was also beautiful, with good bacon, eggs cooked as asked for, good strong mushrooms, and several tomatoes on the vine. Service was good too.

A little warning: do watch the stairs. I came though one door on our way down to the dining area and there was an immediate step that I didn't notice and almost fell down. I was much more careful after that.

This was our second visit to The George and Dragon for Sunday Lunch since discovering it by accident on a day trip to The Wensleydale Creamery. I had a beef dinner and my girlfriend had fish and chips; both were equally delicious. In fact my girlfriend said it was the best fish and chips she's ever had and considering we live on the coast (Hartlepool) that's saying something.

Great beer, great old school English country pub atmosphere, some very funny postcards in the toilets and most importantly, first class food. Well worth a visit!!

The 2nd time we have stayed at this wonderful pub. The rooms are spotlessly clean, beds are comfortable and the food is excellent. We stayed on a special offer weekend break and it was fabulous value for money. They welcome dogs in some rooms also. Even on a busy Saturday night when the place was full of locals and visitors the service was very good. We cannot recommend it highly enough.
