An Inn as it should be - food, refreshment and a comfy bed for the night. The standard in this case was excellent, especially the food. The General Tarleton was a last minute find and one that we will most certainly visit again. Bedrooms are comfortable, they make the best of what they have with nice little touches like, homemade biscuits, water and fresh milk. For a Yorkshireman back on home turf, things couldn't have started off better than a pint of Timothy Taylors Landlord before dinner. The menu had something for us both, plenty of meat and fish and all local, the Seafood Thermidor was a masterpiece and my rib of beef melted in my mouth. The only thing the General Tarleton doesn't have is a comfy lounge area if you are staying over but we weren't rushed from our table so it didn't bother us.

Was reccommended to try this restaurant and was very dissappointed. My elderly mother and I were placed at a table in a tight postion against a wall and where there was considerable footfall, so we were jousled, I asked to be moved which was not liked at all by the arrogant manager. We were practically ignored whilst trying to attract attention for drinks, and we were served when THEY were ready to do so. Over all a terrible experience and would NOT reccommend this place to anyone

The General Tarleton is a notable gastro-pub close to the A1 between Knaresbrough and Boroughbridge. In the past I have avoided staying there as often as I would like as its prices for accommodation were a tad too high in my opinion. A card on the table promotes Special Midweek Offers - superior double room £129 B&B rising to £150 at the weekend. For a place with no facilities ie gym etc., then I think it is overpriced. Seeing on the web a weekly business rate of £75 B&B I was off like a shot and very pleased I did. Entering the GT there is a well presented reception are with a small lounge. The bedrooms are extremely well appointed with good bathrooms and plenty of good quality soaps and potions. The bed was very comfortable and whopee a place that uses soft feather pillows. The only downside to those who do not know what they will get is that leaving the reception area you enter the corridors to the rooms and these have dreary fluorescent lights, dreary green decor (in need of refurbishment) and an equally dreary carpet. By now you will think you are in a cheap lodge hotel, but do not fear, when you open you bedroom door, you will be encouraged. Why when the rest of the GT has good lighting and a super atmosphere - they don't do something about this, I don't know. Eating at the GT is a wonderful experience and both dinner and breakfast is an absolute joy. Great food, well priced and pleasant service - no wonder it wins prizes. The fillet steak I had was the best ever. I have eaten many times, and stayed a few at the GT and never been disappointed. Well worth a visit - especially if they keep the room prices at a reasonable price. The recently retired chairman of Morrison's supermarkets recently had his retirement dinner here - and I don't expect they would have risked it being a flop. If it was half as good as my visit - he will be a happy man!
