“Lovely break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 November 2013

This place is fantastic value for money (especially in the winter months) - staff are very pleasant, food is lovely and not overpriced and accommodation, although in need of some tlc in places, is still very good . The actual Hall is fantastic and well placed for walks and Hawes town. Having stayed in 5* gold accommodation in The Dales, Simonstone Hall is still well worthy of a visit and we will definitely return.

Room Tip: Room 11 is ground floor and has fantastic views

Normally I would not stay in this type of hotel with children; but this was a trip won by my 9yr old in a magazine competition. I'm not sure it is really aimed at families with young children (except for weddings) - it is more for a luxury pamper break / country-life aspirational visit.

That said, the breakfast staff were excellent and very welcoming (I didn't see any other staff as my wife did the check-in). It is a large house with excellent views of the Wensley dales and decently sized ornate rooms.

Our trip was on a wet and blustery weekend and the first advice that I would give is travel there in the daylight (!) - it was quite a stressful drive in poor driving conditions and made me feel that I was taking part in the first scene of "An American Werewolf in London" with the rain, fog, leaves and isolation. In some ways equally scary were the number of fragile objects in the corridors and on surfaces in the rooms - we had quite bouncy small-folk with us, so they got put away quite quickly (the knick-knacks, not the kids).

The children liked the bed but weren't impressed by the TV (not that sort of place really); and I was not all that impressed by the lack of WiFi when they fell asleep (see tip) - bring a book. Shower was perfectly OK, bath was a standalone tub, all fine - if you are very tall be prepared to see some unfinished decorating - short folk will not notice :).

The hotel seems to be frequented by walkers and shooters on weekdays who were up and out before my urban family so breakfast was quiet. On the weekend this is absolutely a wedding hotel - and a very good choice for that, but not really for small kids unless they are auditioning for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Room Tip: There is no WiFi in the furthest room except right by the door, so perhaps you should choose one in...

We've stayed at this hotel many times over many years and have noticed a slow decline in standards over recent years. This time we couldn't get a room booking as they were full but decided to try and eat there one night whilst staying at the nearby (and most excellent Stone House Hotel). We entered the bar, ordered drinks and enquired as to whether a table for 2 might be available that evening only to be asked in a peremptory fashion "are you with the wedding party?" to which we replied that we were not. The next response stunned us with its rudeness - "well you can't eat here then"! We acknowledged this and started to discuss where we might eat instead when the barman interrupted and said "so do you still want the drinks then?". We drank our drinks and left with great sadness that a hotel with such architectural character and situated in the most perfect of Yorkshire locations could allow its service standards to deteriorate so far. This one incident will not deter us from staying or visiting this hotel again but others who have less affection for it will not be so tolerant.

Stayed at Simonstone Hall 5th October as a couple, excellent hotel, excellent location views to admire.

All staff brilliant, service excellent, meal in restaurant very good.

I would recommend this to any body wanting a relaxing break, we aim to go back in Nov/Dec.

I can't recommend this hotel any higher, than excellent all round.

Keep up the good work Simonstone !!

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a view to Hawes, breathtaking

I recently booked accommodation at the Simonstone Hall Hotel, but on arrival found it was not possible to get my wheelchair into the en-suite bathroom. There were two separate step changes to get to the bedroom, albeit reduced by temporary wooden ramps. Although the hotel and room were lovely, we had no option but to leave. The problem arises through hoteliers not understanding the range and diversity of disabled people's needs. The hotel business needs to work to improve their knowledge so that they are able to provide visitors with an informed choice regarding facilities and services that they can offer in an objective way and knowing the specifications of the key areas that guests will be using. Not a reflection on Simonstone Hall Hotel particularly, but, more a general lack of awareness amongst hoteliers.

Room Tip: Ensure that places described as accessible to disabled people really area, either through an accredi...

We have grown to love Hawes over the past 4 years, staying in the village at two lovely cottages and also at Simonstone Hall with family on all occasions. So during our walking weekend on the 4th October we looked forward to returning to Simonstone Hall for an evening meal. So were so delighted to be offered a lift by a lovely young member of staff and planned our evening with a drink in the cozy bar followed by a meal in the brasserie.

On arrival we were served at the bar by the Tim,who we believe to be the Manager ? Someone who isn't welcoming at all ( we had experienced this on during our stay in June ) he is always successful in making us feel unwelcome with his abrupt, condescending and thoroughly un interested manner. That aside we were directed to a table with 3 chairs ( we were a group of 4 ) and given the menus. After a very short time we were asked for our choices and taken through to the brasserie. I will add here that we had only just poured our drinks when we were swiftly moved to our table ? I had chosen Oven roasted chicken stuffed with chorizo an ricotta, the waitress appeared to be attentive when ensuring it wasn't the grilled chicken. We waited at our table under glaring halogen spots for 30 minutes before the meal was served. My husband was then told there was only one portion of duck left and was asked to choose another meal without being shown the menu again. He was then served 'Icelend' scampi and the Chicken Coq au van which was served to my sister was pale and watery. Then to add insult to injury I was served a piece of dry grilled chicken ? I did ask the waiter if there had been a mistake but he said the chef had confirmed it was the stuffed chicken but that the chorizo and ricotta had evaporated during the cooking process ..??

We were so disappointed and really didn't want to complain or make a fuss but even though we questioned the meal and brought it to the attention of the staff on two occasions, we were only offered £5 refund. It's a shame that a hotel in such a stunning setting is being managed in this way and can only warn people to think twice about visiting.. During our stay in Hawes enjoyed superior food in the Crown and the Curry Cottage and experienced great hospitality from genuine people. I would doubt very much that we would ever return to Simonstone Hall after such poor service.

If only tripadvisor allowed 6 stars then Simonstone would get all 6. It never ceases to amaze me just how fantastic this place is. Everytime we visit Simonstone the quality, standard of service and general experience just seems to get better. The setting is simply beyond belief where you can sit outside in the garden/patio area and enjoy the view of the hills looking down towards Hawes.

The staff here are always friendly, and the level of service and professionalism here is a credit to Yorkshire. Our 3-course meal was top class and beautifully presented and the prices very reasonable indeed. The hotel has a fine balance of luxury decor and traditional ornamental features all of which give Simonstone an overwhelming knack of appealing to all clientèle. There is always a nice atmosphere here, with no airs and graces, just a genuine welcome.

2 years after getting married here and our second anniversary visit was as enjoyable as the day itself. Simonstone gets 6 out of 6
