We first went to Simonstone Hall last year, I booked it as a surprise for my wife's 30th birthday and we fell in love with the place! I wanted somewhere 'posh' but affordable near Hawes where I used to come every year as a child, and Simonstone had a great spring deal and fitted the brief!

The hotel is 3 star, although (from our limited knowledge of hotels) you wouldn't know it wasn't higher.

The setting is amazing! Positioned perfect walking distance from Hawes, the Buttertubs and Hardraw Force and the hotel gardens are beautiful.

The rooms are probably a little bit on the basic side - everything is perfectly decent but the bathrooms could do with a spruce up and maybe a little modernising throughout - but only if we're being really picky! Caffetiers are provided in the rooms which is always a positive.

The staff are only to pleased to help satisfy your every whim and the food is to die for. We ate in the restaurant first time we went, and the bistro/bar the second time although the food was equally excellent! I mean really good!

All in all we cannot recommend Simonstone enough and if we need to prove the point further we went again this spring and are already looking forward to our next visit

We arrived for an evening meal , we had not booked , the service and food was excellent. The menu was varied and reasonably priced. The view from the dining room was breathtaking. There was a slight error in the bill but this was easily rectified.

A quick visit and a quick review. Thank you for that and this is appreciated. It shows again that it is good to communicate when something happens, which is not quite right, in your case the bill. I am pleased that it was resolved in a satisfactory manner. Thank you.

I spent 2 nights here over the weekend. The Location is perfect at the bottom of Buttertubs Pass, with easy access to Hawes and The Dales attractions. I was in Room 18, there is nothing really wrong with the room, but it is a basic room. The bed isn't quite big enough, I'm 6'2". The Room is compact. I was in the room alone, If there had been somebody else with me, it would have been very claustrophobic. Tea & Coffee, with biscuits is supplied which is a nice touch. There is an iron & board + hairdryer. Freeview TV, although the EPG does not work and neither did the TV remote. The room is above the bar exit/entrance for the staff and they can be quite loud late at night. Breakfast has everything you would expect, juices, yoghurts, teas, cereals and a cooked selection. I ordered Kippers on the 1st day and they arrived uncooked & raw. So i ordered poached eggs which were under done. Each day there was something not quite right. When I ordered the Chicken & Mushroom pie, the pastry was like shortbread, there was so much butter in it! Everything is OK, it's a sort of "that'll do!" impression. The staff appear to be lovely people, & the guy in the Bar was cheerful. Would i stay again? if i was in the area and the price was right, then possibly.

Room Tip: No Air Con, Rooms are stuffy. Farmland, so... when you open a window the flies flood in!

My wife and I stayed here with Mr Ruffles our Jack Russell - the hotel reception staff were more pleased to see our dog than us - I think - only joking - wonderful staff who made us and Mr R feel at home from the moment we arrived. The drive to the country house was breathatking - I didn't know that Yorkshire was so beautiful.
Some lovely walks in the area and some very close places of interest to drive (town and landscape)
The rain did spoilit a little but I left the wife having a coffe and me & Mr R tackled the sheep and the hills - it was great - thank you
The rooms are excellent, the breakfast huge and evening meal was a pleasure.
It is alo wonderful to visit places such as this, a lovely stay, lovely staff, lovely food and have the dog safe and warm in your room waiting for you.

Room Tip: Try for a room at the rear of the country house overlooking the country side - picture card perfect

Dear Daveoffshore (and Mr R),

You and Mr R seemed to be happy with your stay at Simonstone Hall. We appreciate the fact that you wrote a review about it, describing your experience. There has been some rain during this summer, even though often the good weather outdid the rain periods. The rain can be a good excuse though, reading your comments, to stay behind in the hotel and just relax. Both sides appeared to be happy with that, including Mr R. Thank you for taking the time to write and, yes, Yorkshire is a surprisingly stunning area to explore (especially when you are used to offshore). You are not the first one to state that.

Kind regards,

General Manager

This was booked by my husband and friends as a surprise weekend. It was fantastic we could bring our dogs and my husband managed to negotiate the £55 fee as we were only staying one night.
On arriving at the venue the hotel staff were very friendly and accommodating. We walked to the falls and had a glass of champagne on the way back. We were not expecting any water, but the £2.50 charge was ok for what it was.
When we got back we had drinks on the terrace and the view was really stunning. Our dogs were happy just pottering around in the gardens.
The room we had was a luxury room and the bed was extremely comfortable and the view was stunning. The bathroom was clean but could do with an upgrade, but nothing to complain about.
When we came to dinner the choice on the menu was just fantastic and we all took a while to decide what to have. However the only downfall with this hotel was the service at dinner. We had pre dinner drinks and then ordered wine, red and white. We were extremely surprised that the wine was just put on the table and we were not even asked to taste it, never mind it been poured. We were all taken aback with this given the standard of the hotel. We certainly didnt expect them to pour all night, but we would have thought they would ask us to taste the wine and pour the first glass.
Overall though the hotel was lovely, a little tired in places, but would certainly go back as it is stunning. The food was excellent and the service at breakfast did make up for the night prior.

I'll keep this short and to the point. After spending around £500 on drinks, & food at this lovely place we were charged 20p by an extremely miserable staff member to use the toilet!! Pricey beer and £5 for a substandard burger were to be expected, given the Tour De France was passing by, but a charge to pee is unacceptable in my opinion. I witnessed many customers urinating in the grounds and behind the hotels sheds etc to avoid the charge on principle - nice for the next set of newlyweds and their guests! Hope the money taken was worth the negative reviews.

Dear Director of Activity,

Thank you for making the effort to write a review, in relation to your time at Simonstone Hall during the passing of the Tour de France on Saturday 5th July.

We have tried over the 2 days, including the Friday, to accommodate all our visitors and residents the best we can. The pricing was seen by many as a fair price, for food and drink, as well as the toilet, and in some cases we had reduced our prices, with the pints of beer-lager priced at £3, being seen as a reasonable price from the events bar.

The number of people in and around the hotel were such that the facilities were at times not sufficient and queuing was a result. In a short period of time around 2000+ people made use of the various hotel facilities. All the areas were manned, including the toilet area; we tried to coordinate these as best as we could and make it as smooth as possible, for all concerned. We thought a charge of 20 pence was reasonable.

On the Saturday we have not been able to please a few visitors, in relation to this charge; however, we can conclude that the 2 days are being considered a great success on many fronts and by many visitors to the area, especially the Saturday. We sincerely regret your experience and conclusions. We have taken your comments on board.

Again, thank you for making the time to write.

Kind regards,

General Manager

The Tour de France passed by this hotel today and our party of 20 watched from the roadside just down from the entrance frequently visiting the hotel bar for beer and burgers throughout our 3 hour wait and with a hot day and 6 thirsty males, 7 thirsty females and 7 children, the rounds were not small. As the riders passed, we all went up to the hotel, ordered cream teas, sandwiches and more beer.........but now comes the crunch......to go to the loo in the hotel even after these purchases.....it cost 20p!, this, even after the crowds had left.,., now, I can accept that during the day people who were passing and just wanted the loo without buying anything from the hotel could be expected to pay for the facility, but we had bought all afternoon!! This was not thought through....genuine customers should have been given a token - a cloakroom ticket or whatever as a free pass to the loo.......it really left a bad impression, even to the extent that the charge continued whilst we were eating afternoon tea on the patio....purchased from the hotel...........now, what would make me less annoyed? How about all the 20p's ..........and they amounted to a lot of money....be donated to the Hawes local charities which small traders in the town were collecting for ( ok, less a small donation for the sundry items required to offer the facility.) there was no sign indicating this was to be the outcome and several complaints from our party fell on deaf ears.......shame on you!!
