“Charming Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

This is a great place to stay... The countryside to start with is so special.... beautiful views over Hawes and beyond, just like we hoped it would be. The room was huge and very gracious and very comfortable... The staff seem very happy and obviously love it there... Food was good and fresh. Would go again anytime...

My partner and I attended a family wedding and stayed for one night. On arrival the staff were very helpful. We'd asked for a room with a large bed and although the first room we were allocated was beautiful, the bed was too small. The hotel team quickly showed us round some other rooms and we finally settled on room 13 (strange for a hotel to have a room 13 but there you go). Our room had a four poster bed, large bathroom with walk in shower and the usual TV, coffee making facilities etc.

The bed was very comfortable, large and with a big, fluffy duvet.

Improvement - yes there are a few things I'd note

- the TV is very small and in a large room I'd say it's too small. In this day and age you'd expect something a little larger
- the TV remotes are very complicated and we had to get a chap from reception to come down to sort it out - other members of our party had the same issues - this needs to be made simpler
- the room would benefit from a safe
- we didn't get any robes in the bathroom and we did book a superior room?
- the guest amenities (soap, shampoo and body wash) are in pump bottles which I assume must be topped up by e hotel. This is not very hygienic and although is probably much more cost effective for the hotel, is not what you'd expect. The bottles are also very difficult to use in the shower so I'd suggest this strategy is reconsidered
- the cups in the rooms are too small - the cups need changing for some tea cups/quality mugs which you can get a good cuppa from
- a pillow menu would be a great touch and very simple (and cost effective) to implement
- as there is no A/C I would suggest that a fan and a sheet are made available for guests as it can get very warm
- there was a card on the bedside table which says "look under the bed" when you do there is another card which says "we even clean under here"... a nice touch but I think it would be worth paying a little more attention to vacuuming especially around the sides of the room
- the large shower leaked onto the bathroom floor - from the corner next to the sink!

The bar and lounge areas are what you'd expect however there are also two interesting rooms where you can have a private dinner. They both seems to be wine cellars, racked out with wines but with a dining table in the middle. One was a bit disorganised and was being used as a store room when we were there however I get the concept and they looked really interesting places to eat. The bar looked well stocked with a few local real ales and the usual draught beers. A large collection of whisky is also available.

The wedding was great, the food was good, the service was attentive and the room used looked beautiful.

Another key aspect about the hotel are the grounds. The views are spectacular from the front of the building. Although the weather wasn't great during our stay we still captured some great shots of Yorkshire in all her glory!

Breakfast was very good. It was a 'help yourself' hot and cold buffet more than likely due to the number of people staying for the wedding. I would imagine that when the hotel is quieter then it would be a buffet for cold items and then table service for hot. The choice was limited but a couple of stars for me were the yoghurts and the sausages (not eaten together you understand), the let downs was the lack of quality fruit and not having the ability to make your own muesli.

All in all a very pleasant stay. Nice room, a little dated and missing those touches which would set Simonstone apart from other quality hotels in the area. If you visit The Lake District then due to the competition you can find an increasing number of quality hotels who offer the charm of an old English Manor but with a modern twist.

Give it a try, especially if you can secure a deal for a night or two with dinner. Hawes has the added benefit of having a few great visitor attractions close-by especially if you like cheese and ice cream!

Hope this helps

Stayed for one night for a quick break. Friendly staff, spotlessly clean. Extremely comfortable bed. Beautiful views, good food. Conveniently located. 1 1/2 miles from Hawes. Walks straight from hotel. Dogs welcome. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Room overlooking Hawes .

I find it bewildering that so many of Britains lovely country house hotels are let down by poor food and untrained staff. Simonstone Hall is a classic example. The building and grounds are wonderful with fantastic views over the Yorkshire Dales but that where it grinds to a halt. We spent 1 night there and we were hoping to have dinner in their restaurant. Unfortunately even as a guest we were told there was no availability so had to eat in the bistro. When I say motorway cafe I'm not joking. Without going into details everything we ate was poor. The staff, did their best but we're running around like headless chickens with no direction from a manager or basic training in the hospitality business. Apparently the manager had been "missing" for 3 weeks and the owner had the business on the market for 6 months, hardly a recipe for an enthusiastic and proud business. It's such a shame because with some tweaking and a decent chef this place could be amazing. The rooms were fine but due to the poor catering I would be unlikely to return.

I do like Simonstone Hall. It is in a beautiful setting, just a couple of miles away from my mother's house, and we have eaten there previously and enjoyed the food. So when I arranged a surprise 15-person family reunion get-together for my mother's 80th birthday I booked Simonstone Hall. They were very obliging, letting us have a large-ish room to ourselves. We booked in May and chose our menu choices, sending them well in advance of our mid-July booking.
Then, a week before the meal, they phoned me to tell me that they had double-booked - with a wedding party! Our meal was booked for 1pm and the wedding party were booked for 2pm. So thay asked if we could arrive at 12:00 and be gone by 2pm. Seeing as how members of my family had come from Dubai, South of France, Kent and Devon, and some of us had not seen each other for several years, and it was my mother's 80th (surprise) birthday meal I declined. We really didn't want to be rushed off the premises.
I don't understand how such a basic error could have been allowed to happen. Unless they thought the wedding party wouldn't mind other people around on their important day?? Fortunately the White Hart in Hawes were able to accommodate us at a week's notice. The food there was a little less special than at Simonstone Hall, but very tasty and more affordable. They gave us excellent service with no fuss, for which we were very grateful at short notice.
Shame on Simonstone Hall for their error. And they lost out on a food order of about £420, plus a large drink order.

Dear Jo L.

At times organisational issues come up and sometimes we have to share these with our guests, as honestly as possible, as we like to accommodate and serve all our guests the best we can. It was sincerely regrettable that you decided to have your luncheon elsewhere. At the same time I am pleased to read that it all worked out well and that occasion was celebrated successfully, as well as having the reunion with the other guests. Our sincere apologies. Your kind words towards Simonstone, mentioned here and there, are very much appreciated. In reference to that; if you like to correspondence a little more, directly with the hotel, please do not hesitate to contact us. It would be a pleasure to accommodate you once more, possibly just yourself and your mother (?); a re-visit to Simonstone Hall, especially as some of you live so near.

Kind regards,

What a find! Country House Hotel in the middle of no-where; without snooty service; very personable and friendly. Had a birthday afternoon tea last Sunday as we were passing; though I have seen before when taking my own clients out "on tour" of Yorkshire. The garden peace, views are really outstanding - I didn't want to leave. Lovely bar area and lounge - just a taster of what is there to be experienced. Will be returning and telling our friends, family - in fact everyone!
Well done Simonstone Hall - keep this up! ps you are now included in my own "tour menus".

Dear nick290459,

Thank you making the effort to write a review on the hotel. It is appreciated. This summer we have had so far lots of opportunities to sit outside on our patio and enjoy the views, whilst enjoying a cup of tea or something stronger. Even late evenings at times. The location of Simonstone Hall is seen by many as a good stop-off point, ‘centrally situated’, when touring the Yorkshire Dales. Depending on your timings, a reservation is recommended, especially when you like to combine your refreshment with food. It is not a problem to us to make a note of it. Again, a sincere thank you for your entry and we look forward to welcoming you again on one of your tours (with everyone?).

Kind regards,

We first went to Simonstone Hall last year, I booked it as a surprise for my wife's 30th birthday and we fell in love with the place! I wanted somewhere 'posh' but affordable near Hawes where I used to come every year as a child, and Simonstone had a great spring deal and fitted the brief!

The hotel is 3 star, although (from our limited knowledge of hotels) you wouldn't know it wasn't higher.

The setting is amazing! Positioned perfect walking distance from Hawes, the Buttertubs and Hardraw Force and the hotel gardens are beautiful.

The rooms are probably a little bit on the basic side - everything is perfectly decent but the bathrooms could do with a spruce up and maybe a little modernising throughout - but only if we're being really picky! Caffetiers are provided in the rooms which is always a positive.

The staff are only to pleased to help satisfy your every whim and the food is to die for. We ate in the restaurant first time we went, and the bistro/bar the second time although the food was equally excellent! I mean really good!

All in all we cannot recommend Simonstone enough and if we need to prove the point further we went again this spring and are already looking forward to our next visit

Room Tip: The standard rooms that we have experienced trend to look toward the side and rear of the hotel. We...
