There is a welcome newcomer to the Hawes culinary scene: the Jumbo Chinese. Opened in the Spring of 2013 by a delightful young couple, who offer a huge variety of carefully cooked and delicious Chinese meals either as a takeaway or served in the café.
The Jumbo was recommended by the Wardens at the Hawes Caravan Club site where we stayed in September and my wife and I can heartily endorse their recommendation. Most of the present trade is local takeaway but for a small charge one can dine in the café which we did. The café, a large room with lots of tables, awaits transformation with a new décor and the odd oriental touch, but the warm welcome and generous portions of appetising food was adequate compensation. The charming owners are set fair to establish a flourishing business. If you find yourself at the bottom of Hawes, the Jumbo is adjacent to the Rope maker. Give it a try: you won't be disappointed.
