“Good Value in Dog-Friendly Dales”
Reviewed 9 September 2013

We stopped in for one night with our two children and dog to break the journey from Scotland to London. The hotel is a very attractive traditional home with lovely well-maintained gardens and enjoys beautiful views over Hawes. We received a warm welcome and our large courtyard room was perfect for all of us. We chose not to eat in the hotel as it is a set menu and therefore not very attractive for the children. Breakfast was good though and Hawes, only a few minutes away, is a lovey market town with lots of dog-friendly pubs and restaurant. I would definitely recommend the hotel and we felt it was very good value for money.

Thank you for your review. We are very glad that you enjoyed your stay! Just a quick note with regard to the menu- we are hoping to introduce a two course option into our menu soon and, although we can easily cater for children as our chefs are happy to cook special dishes for them, we may possibly introduce a childs menu also. We have no plans for an a la carte menu, but feel that more options will make our current menu more attractive to a wider range of people. We hope you agree! Thanks again and we hope to see you back at Stone House soon...

I stopped the night here on the last night of my little road trip,

It is in a excellent location and has some brilliant stunning views. The staff are very friendly and the food is excellent.

It's has large resturant, which do brilliant food and a nice little bar.

I recommend sitting by the real fire with a coffee after diner very relaxing

The room was good and comfy and I had a excellent nights sleep.

The breakfast was excellent and really filling had to go back to my room for a nap afterwards as I was that full

I also recommend that if you have time to do the little walk around the hotel to the falls nearby very nice views and worth a visit.

We stayed at the hotel for one Friday night whilst traveling around the local area.

The hotel is located in its own grounds, a twenty minute walk from the nearby town of Hawes. The welcome was pleasant. A slight frustration being the room was not available at the advertised check in time for an hour. However, the time was well used having sandwiches and the tastiest chips in a quiet and comfortable bar area.

The room (22) was well appointed, which included a comfortable setee for two. However for the premium price of £145 per room, I have experienced better for a lot less.

We did not eat in the restaurant that night. We felt a fixed price of £35 per person, for a five course meal (with options for the first three courses), a bit restricted. We did ask if we could have single courses from the menu for individual prices, but this option was not available. There are a number of local restaurants in Hawes, but remember to book early in peak periods.

The breakfast the following morning was excellent and relaxed.

Overall, the staff were very friendly and approachable. I do however think on balance we will not return.

We appreciate your comments, and I am glad that you enjoyed the majority of your stay. With regard to the negative points you raised, we are in the process of planning a major overhaul to the decor of all our rooms at the end of this year. This is necessary as, naturally, over time guest rooms need attention. If you were to return again you should see a big improvement in decor.

We advertise our check in time FROM 1pm. This meaning that rooms will be ready from 1pm onwards. Sometime rooms will be ready slightly before, other times slightly after. As you mentioned, we made you comfortable and sorted you out with lunch during your wait, so I would have thought that this would be more than acceptable? With regards to dinner options, we change our menu every day, and try to make it a pleasant dining experience rather than just a quick bar meal, however we understand that some people may wish to have less courses. Therefore we are looking at introducing a reduced (possibly two-course) option into our menu in the very near future for those who would find this more appealing.

Again, thank you for your mostly positive comments, but having only stayed with us for one night, with a good portion on this being spent away from the hotel having dinner elswhere, I do feel that you did not experience anywhere near enough about us to achieve a "balanced" opinion. To say that you would "on balance" not return here we find unfair, and we would be delighted to welcome you back at Stone House at some point in the future so that you can experience what we are really about.

Used this hotel as my base whilst visiting the Yorkshire dales on my motorcycle for a couple of days.
It is friendly and charming, with real Yorkshire hospitality. It has an 'olde world' style of charm complemented by very friendly and helpful staff who will actually take time to sit down and chat to guests. The food is excellent, a new menu each day with local products. Plenty of parking and a new secure shed for motorcycles and bicycles. My room (6) had a view of the gardens and the dales.Recommended.

My husband and I wanted somewhere really special to celebrate our Silver Wedding anniversary and the Stone House Hotel delivered 110%. This has to be one of the best hotels we have stayed in the UK. Our room had the most stunning view, the room itself was lovely, the staff were friendly and provided just the right level of service without being overly attentive. The lounges and bar area are so welcoming and comfortable and there is a great walk through stunning countryside right from the front door. And they even provided us with a bottle of Prosecco to mark our anniversary. We will definitely be back without waiting for another special event

Room Tip: Room 19 is spacious and has a stunning view

We've looked through other reviews and agree that the accommodation is excellent, staff are friendly and the meals couldn't be faulted. We had room 19 in the coach house adjacent to the main building about 20 yards from the main entrance. What a wonderful view. The room was well appointed with period furniture and, perhaps I'd say unkindly, so was the TV! But who wants to watch TV in such a setting. When we stayed there were quite a number of very well behaved dogs and owners but we did have to negotiate them in the reception rooms from time to time. So, if you're allergic to dogs, which we aren't, then perhaps this is not for you. For owners of well behaved dogs Stone House Hotel would be ideal. We have rated cleanliness down a notch, not because we found any problem, but dogs were about all the time so some hair and aroma are inevitable.

Room Tip: Rooms in the Coach House have lovely views but are a few yards from the hotel entrance.

Stone House Hotel is beautifully situated and the views are magnificent. We found the room we were in to be large and comfy but it was airless with only one small window, out of the two large windows, able to be partly opened to allow in the fresh air.The bathroom whilst adequate, had no windows at all and was pokey. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Dinner was a 7 out of 10 - large quantities and 4 courses excluding coffee but not imaginative. Breakfast good but would prefer a buffet style for the fruit, juice, yoghurt, cereal and pastries rather than waitress service. Overall an above average old English style experience, our biggest criticism lack of ventilation in the room.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with best view perhaps conservatory rooms the best?

We remember your stay, and seem to recall that you stayed in Room 1, one of our Four Posters. This large room is the original master bedroom for Stone House, and contains two large windows, one which looks South over the gardens to the front and accross the Wensleydale, and another which looks out accross the fields and garden to the West. Both of these windows have large opening sections and the secondary double glazing one one window can be pulled right back. With this in mind, I'm afraid that we completely disagree that ventilation in this room is poor. I have personally been in this room when all of the windows have been open, and on a breezy day this makes it like a wind tunnel. With regard to the bathroom, no it does not have any windows, but does have an extraction system. Please remember that this is an old house and, as in many hotels, windows are present in some (but not all) bathrooms.

Our dinner menu is prepared fresh every day using locally sourced ingredients. If you look back at our previous reviews you will find that the high quality of our food features highly, and if you felt any different we would have much rather found out at the time rather than on TripAdvisor. Also coffee and cheese ARE included in the £35 price of dinner. We feel that this is good value as cheeseboard alone in some establishments could be over £10.
You mentioned that you would have preferred a buffet style breakfast in the morning instead of waitress service. I would have thought that most people would prefer to sit comfortably and read a newspaper whilst being waited on during breakfast than be constantly having to get up and serve themselves. After all, you are paying for service! If you felt that the quantity of food available was limited by waitress service compared to a buffet, I can assure you that this is not the case. The waitresses will bring you as much as you like- all you have to do is ask them.

Whilst I am still confused as to why you would describe us as "above average", and then leave an Average star rating, I am very glad that you enjoyed the situation of the hotel, and I hope that you can return to Stone House in the future and have a much better experience
