Went to Harriots when we stopped there the first time in June, then stopped for a weekend in August. The food both times was absolutely faultless. Liz takes on board what you do / don't like and, when she has a very fussy eater like me to accommodate, adapts her meals and hits the mark every time! Absolutely delicious!

We have eaten in many Wensleydale establishments over the past 10 years, mostly good, substantial food (usually too substantial!) but lacking finesse and professional standards of service. When Herriots' new owners started in spring 2011, we noticed an immediate difference on a regular afternoon coffee visit - an extra quality and subtlety in the food and service - superb soup, perfect handmade biscuits with hot drinks, extra good cakes and homemade preserves to die for! We met the new owners, Liz and Glenn, and immediately realised from their past professional experience that we would be in for a treat so begged to be allowed to go for dinner if and when they could manage it (they run the B+B so start with breakfast then cater for the cafe all day, enough of a challenge without evening meals!) We were not disappointed and were allowed to join the residents for dinner the following Saturday evening. A pleasant house wine, potted salmon, chicken in a delicious sauce with impeccable vegetables, followed by melt-in-the mouth brownie + ice cream (for my husband) and the most divine lemon posset I have ever eaten (and I have eaten everything and everywhere for the past 50 odd years). It was not a sophisticated restaurant meal - just a first class dinner cooked and served by talented professionals, whom we are lucky to have in Hawes. Long may they flourish (and keep making lemon posset!!) here in Wensleydale.
