“Excellent Pub B&B”
Reviewed 15 July 2013

We stayed over a weekend with friends and found the rooms, food, beer and service to be exemplary. Any pub wanting to know how to improve their rating on TripAdvisor would do well to send their staff here for a weekend's exposure to some seriously good customer service. The food was also excellent. Their steak pie in particular is "something else" - truly worthy of the name "pie". So often these days a "pie" is merely "stew with fluffy pastry topping"; a travesty of the word pie - but this is the real thing. The beer is well-kept too - with excellent selection of English ales & continental beers available while we were there. The rooms were excellent too; with comfortable beds and quality fittings - all in good working order.
I've read the reviews below, and have to say that the parking thing is not a niggle - it's real. There's two parking spaces with the pub - plus restricted street parking (2 hours) on Station Road. The nearest 24hr car park is the far side of town. We had three cars, so did a "2 car shuffle" with no problem, but if you were the third couple to arrive with a car, you've potentially got a 15 minute walk from the car park! The best option is undoubtedly to come by train; the picturesque Victorian station is 10 yards from the pub front door.
Don't let the parking put you off though - this is a first class establishment; worth a bit of hassle for an excellent weekend.

Room Tip: 1, 2 & 3 have windows overlooking the station, and get the morning light. Room 4 is darker in th...

The staff here are wonderful, great beer and what’s more they know about the beer! Makes a change from a lot of pubs that just ‘pour and serve’.
Excellent guest beers, some nice malts as well. Food has always been good for us. Just a really nice atmosphere the moment you walk through the door.

we wanted to stay in a pub with good real ale and food. This proved to be a fair choice. The staff were all very helpful. Car parking could be an issue but we were lucky to be able to park right outside.Any one coming by train is in good shape as the station is next door.
The bedroom was very good and quiet. The meal in the bistro was average but helped by an excellent choice of beer.

This really is a great pub! The food is lovely and well priced (steak pie is brilliant) and the real ales and foreign beer selections are top notch - great choice which changes by the week. The service is always really friendly and welcoming, in my opinion this is a real asset of the place...the welcoming and efficient manager in particular. We make it a regular on a Friday night and there is always a nice feeling about the pub with a number of familiar, friendly faces. On a warm night sitting outside on the terrace, in the part of knaresborough with no cars, the church bells chiming and the odd train rumbling by, I honestly think you'll struggle to find a nicer place in the whole area to have a drink! This really does rank as one of my favourite pubs in Britain! Just ignore some of the pedantic negatives comments on this post and get down there!

Headed down for a bite to eat. Counted six dogs in the bar.... One of which had paws on the table.

Staff patting the dogs.... Not good hygiene.

I'm a dog lover... But I don't want them in the same room as I'm eating. I certainly don't want them jumping up at the table.

You pay a premium at the mitre... For that you expect decent, hygienic conditions as a minimum.

One other thing... Why is it always so hot in there?

After a visit to Mother Shipton's Cave and a walk up a steep hill, we had a very welcoming and lovely meal here. Great value as well. Please note that the chips are amazing and a must try! Would happily visit again next time in the area.

Good beer, rooms and food. Breakfast was especially. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Read some silly nit picking comments about parking but the close proximity of the station and the narrow road adds to the character of the Mitre.
