“A Hidden Gem”
Reviewed 21 November 2013 via mobile

I visited the Royal Oak on a Sunday afternoon on the recommendation of several friends and I can easily say I shall be recommending it to as many people as I can. As I Chef I am somewhat picky and quite critical when it comes to eating out but I couldn't find a fault with this place.
The food is easily at rosette standard and the price is so good you'll look twice £19.95 3 course Sunday menu is as good as you'll find anywhere.
I could quite easily go on and on about every aspect but I won't all ill simple say is go and try this place out, the welcome is warm, the beer is fantastic, the setting and surroundings are perfect for a family get together and the food will leave you wanting more

“Am I missing something?”
Reviewed 3 November 2013

Listed as No1 in Knaresborough, what better recommendation for a special occasion?

Well as it turned out not so good.

The food was fine, the service mediocre, the ambience non existent, and it struck me the only person who knew what they were doing was the chef! The restaurant staff seemed to be absent most of the time and the barman multi tasking should he wander in from the bar, customers were just people you made a casual acquaintance with, should you be passing, and they looked in need. Even getting the bill and paying it was hard work.

Clearly the priority here is as an ale house, which it seems to excel at, the bar being packed..

“Great Sunday lunch, a rare find”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

Its very rare that you can find a great Sunday lunch with the option of rare beef and real homemade yorkshire puddings. Worth the trip out to the beautiful village of Staveley. Great starters and puddings too. Nice atmosphere. Best Sunday inch in the area so far.

“Ticking all the Boxes”

Popped in for a quick lunch on the way to Knaresborough. Cosy inside with a roaring fire and comfy seats in big bay windows.Only had sandwiches - lovely rare flavousome roast beef, juicy prawn with marie rose sauce and homemade fish finger! All served with the most fantastic dripping fried chips - superb! Service sound and friendly - looked a place that would do justice to a hearty dinner.
