“A nice weekend break”
Reviewed 24 August 2013

On arrival we were given one of the rooms in the old part of the building - a little "tatty" and suffering from the road noise outside [we were taking up one of their cheap offer weekends]. However, to their credit, we were moved to a much nicer from for the second night. Staff were really friendly and the restaurant was good. Pool was also good, but didn't get around to using, what looked like a well equipped gym.

When we arrived we were late for our dinner reservation which was delayed for us, we went to our room which was in the older part of the hotel and was very disappointed. It smelled strongly of damp and there were old marks on the ceiling of previous problems. The road outside was very noisy despite it being 8pm. Despite curtains closed, blinds shut, windows shut it still was very noisy. The bed was a standard double quite small too. We asked to move in reception but were told there were no spare rooms but we could be moved the next day. With very little sleep the noise from the road died about midnight and resumed again about 5 am! The restaurant standard was high and the food & service very good.

The next day we were moved to a more acceptable room , modern, not smelling of damp and a large comfortable bed. However the window although we could open this as no noise was broken and held up by a piece of wood to keep it open! We discovered the Spa and it was very nice, good facilities it was a saving grace.

My recommendation is to ask for a newer room on booking so that you are not placed in the older rooms. The restaurant however is well worth a visit and very reasonable. The Spa too is worth spending some time in.

Room Tip: Not near road or in old part of the hotel.

We stayed for 3 nights and had a room at the front of the hotel. You do have to remember it is a very old building and lots of creaks and some noise from the main road outside. The room could do with a little tlc, ceiling above the bed and old windows could do with some work. However I felt the cleaning staff did very well with what they had to work with. The towels were clean as was the bedding although the bed was creaky and a bit lumpy. On the positive side the hotel is in an excellent place for visiting Knaresborough and suited us perfectly.
We ate in the hotel restaurant on 1 night and the food was very well cooked as was the breakfast. The service was efficient and friendly. Every person on reception was helpful and pleasant. The night staff who served us at the bar on Sunday night was especially attentiveAll in all a good weekends accommodation for our requirements.5 star it aint but tried hard.

I stayed here for business. Most staff were helpful but the place needs some investment and seems to have got complacent.

The menu in the restaurant didn't change the two nights I was there, not even the specials. No-one came to take my coffee/hot food order the second morning until I'd finished most of the food from the buffet.

There are noise issues with the room from both outside and inside and the wifi doesn't work throughout the hotel. Its a nice location and could be a really good place but has a way to go.

Very claustrophobic twin bedded room (described as being larger than average for a 3 star hotel)with poor lighting and in poor repair (headboard loose, shelf falling down, soap dish hanging off and lumpy uncomfortable mattress), but perhaps the most unpleasant aspect was the awful smell of drains in the ensuite. Manager and all staff very nice and gave us complementary dinner and spa treatment to compensate but really we would rather have been able to enjoy our stay, feel comfortable and be able to sleep soundly. Thankfully this was a Tesco voucher deal but full price for this room (Room 1)would have been £95 per night. Better to stay in Travelodge. However breakfast and dinner were very good.

I stayed here for business for about 3 days in June, its nice place, really well situated for Knaresborough town centre, castle grounds etc, once in the bedrooms it was clear the money had all been spent downstairs, the paint was peeling off the windows and walls and ceiling, the ceiling was stained where a previous leak had not been re decorated, the light in the bathroom couldn't be switch off, reported and was told they were aware but most residents agreed to leave it on!! it was so hot it could not be touched!. the floors were really creaky every where, we had a lot of rain when I was there and there were pots on the landing collecting the drips.
On the positive side the staff were really good nothing was too much trouble and the food was good. Its a real shame it good be a fabulous hotel. I did use the Gym at the back of the hotel but found it a little limited in equipment but very useable
