Best Western Dower House Hotel & Spa
Ranked #2 of 3 Hotels in Knaresborough
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 3 January 2014

After a quiet Christmas, on Boxing day!!, we decided to book a hotel for a few days over the New Year. We used a lateroom booking site, and found Dower House hotel in Knaresborough. Knowing the town and area as we regularly visit Yorkshire we took a chance and booked for 4 nights. What a welcome we had by Ken the manager and his reception staff. He even contacted us before our visit to see if we wanted to have a table for the Gala New Year dinner. They were friendly from the start. The hotel also has a spa attached which we used including Spa treatments. Initially we had reservations re the dinner as we felt it was quite pricey, but after eating in the restaurant the first evening we took the plunge and reserved a table for New Year!
What a night! The attention to detail was brilliant, welcome drinks canapes, a super meal followed on by a disco. We danced to the small wee hours. What FUN!!
The hotel staff were clearly very well trained and lead from the front by Ken, they were professional at all times but friendly too. We would have no hesitation booking in the future! Well done Dower house and Happy new year to you all!!

Room Tip: If there is a do on,in the dining room don't have the room over the dining room.

We were part of a small party of adults who had stayed here for the last three or four years for the New Year package, and we had stayed here with them for the first time last year.
Last year's stay at some £350 each was quite disappointing: problems with the room heating/hot water, shabby rooms, poor views which they can't really do much about, and poor New Year entertainment. For example we went to play games after a very nicely cooked and presented meal as the disco entertainment was poor to terrible, and only came back to the restaurant to see New Year in after which, like most others there, we went to bed at 12.30. To be fair the manager was poorly and away from the hotel so someone stood in but even so the rooms our party used (superior and ordinary) needed updating and a overhaul as did the disco.
This year was as different again and points to note were an updated room with good quality and nice décor, no damage to fittings and adequate room facilities. Public areas were comfortable with real log fires and nice walks by the river, into town and a good bus service to Harrogate. On the down-side our room shower needed more power and fitting independently of others on the landing, there was initially no soap or shower cap and the beds (disappointingly two doubles pushed together rather than a king size) was soft and lumpy with only two standard sized pillows per person. The manager personally welcomed arriving guests and was very visible and accessible the whole time, the food was superb although like many hotels there was too much of it and we were disappointed not to eat it all as it was so tasty, the disco DJ entertainment was the best I've experienced for many, many years - he had the guests dancing from the first record to past 1.30 when we went to bed shattered!
Even local people had booked to attend the New Year event so that means a lot to me. We've booked 5 rooms and another guest re-booked 18.
The staff from room service to bar to restaurant were superb as they were last year. Training prep-talks were done before each evening meal, welcome reception drinks and canapés, mulled wine, home-made shortbread, clematines and lunch time meal-deals - fantastic!!
Well done 'team Dower House' and we'll see you for New Year later this year. Best Western - get some new beds and better showers please to support the hard work your hotel staff do to please customers and bring them back year on year!

Room Tip: We've only had rooms in the 20 - 26 part of the hotel so can't say really.

My husband and I stayed with our dog over Christmas, for the three day Christmas package, along with my parents and their dog. The hotel is excellent, the food was very good, and all the staff very friendly and welcoming. My husband has coeliac disease, and they catered to this very well, with gluten free cakes provided for afternoon tea, and plenty of gluten free bread. They were also very helpful when one of our party was unfortunately taken ill on the final night. They were very welcoming of the dogs, which is a nice bonus - some allegedly dog friendly hotels are no such thing, but this one is definitely dog friendly!

Open fires gave the bar and lounge a welcoming atmosphere, although with the weather being unusually mild, there was no real need for them. The dogs appreciated the fires anyway!

The spa area is nice, the pool is a little narrow and short, but long enough to swim reasonably well. The sauna and steam room are apparently excellent. There is a range of massages and treatments available, although we did not try any.

Normal rooms are quite small but well equipped, superior standard ones were much more roomy. My only criticism would be that the wireless is unreliable, but the hotel are aware of this.

Overall, an excellent stay and good value, we will definitely visit again.

Room Tip: Basic rooms above the bar do get some noise coming up through the ceiling, superior rooms are much b...

Myself, my wife and dog have just enjoyed a one night stay as a package with the Christmas party night. £29.95 for the party and £25 a head for B&B. At that price we weren't expecting a lot from the room but it turned out to far exceed expectations albeit relatively small. The reception / bar area was very welcoming with a log burning stove and decorations up. The meal and disco were good and the staff excellent. We had a problem with our shower the following morning. Another was made available in the neighbouring room with bath robes provided and a small discount when we checked out. Excellent dog walking on the doorstep too along the River Nidd. All in all a good value stay in a friendly hotel which we would recommend.

I've just returned from a weekend in Knaresborough and stayed at The Dower House and loved every minute of it. We dined in the hotel on the Friday evening and the food was out of this world. The whole of our group agreed it was the best food we've had. Our room was fantastic (although the bathroom a little dated) but spotlessly clean with everything you would need. The staff couldn't have been better, my companion is partially sighted and they were extremely helpfull without being patronising, very friendly and welcoming. The spa/sauna area is small but again, has everything you need to indulge your self. Saying that there is a seperate spacious gym and several treatment rooms. We ended our stay in the very comfortable lounge with a cup of tea by the lovely wood burning stove. Anyone visiting Knaresborough I would recommend this hotel.

Spent two nights here on a romantic weekend for two - ie without the kids! The staff is the hotels outstanding asset, all staff were exceptionally friendly, friendly and courteous despite the same issues coming up again and again.
We checked into our room (5) about 1730 and found that the shower door had come of it's runners unfortunately they had no maintenance staff available but the receptionist couldn't have been more helpful trying to fix it but unfortunately made it worse! A little disappointed that we couldn't shower before going out for the evening (the hotel was full) the receptionist promised to sort something out for our return. On our return she gave us a choice of two rooms as their occupants had not checked in. To our great disappointment the next morning there was no hot water at all!!! We told the new receptionist at breakfast and apparently this is a regular occurrence but at soon as we told them they said they could turn the water back on. Ken, I have noticed you respond to comments - why not put a note in the bathrooms/info book to say that sometimes the boiler trips out, please inform reception if you have no hot water and it can be rectified immediately. I spent a great deal of time waiting for hot water to come through due to the lack of a shower the previous evening before giving up when I could have simply telephoned reception.
Secondly we were attracted to the hotel partly due to the free WIFI - this was very poor and as an independent tour guide rely on an internet connection for my business, A great deal of time was wasted trying to connect, I live in France so could not afford to incur significant roaming charges which I did as the WiFi in the hotel was so bad. To be fair the staff did reset the router several times but connection was intermittent at worst.
I suggest you turn down the heating as the hotel was seriously hot and the money saved could be invested in a new boiler and new internet connection.
Overall, the staff were excellent as they dealt professionally with reoccurring difficulties through no fault of their own, please address these issues otherwise you are in danger of losing your outstanding staff. For a Best Western I was very disappointed in the standard of the hotel. I appreciate you are undergoing an upgrade but in the meantime perhaps consider charging less for the rooms not yet renovated.

Room Tip: Room 5 is spacious with a four poster bed however no bath (shower only)and on main road so very nois...
