“Super weekend”
Reviewed 17 March 2014

We had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend at the Dower House Hotel: very friendly staff; comfortable hotel; superb food in restaurant; excellent breakfast. We would definitely recommend the hotel and the area for a weekend break.

We stayed here for 3 nights courtesy of TESCO rewards. I can honestly say this is one of the best "Best Western" hotels we have stayed in. The staff were all fantastic. They all got the balance right between not enough and too much attention. They were a credit to the hotel. The room we had was very well appointed, very clean and modern. We chose to eat in the hotel and were not disappointed at all. Plenty of choice, beautifully cooked and presented in a comfortable restaurant. This hotel is also in a great place to visit Leeds, York, Harrogate, Knaresborough and Wetherby. Whether you choose to go through Tesco or not I'm sure you will not be disappointed with your stay here.

Booked a last minute Spa Stay Over Treat with my daughter. Drove from South Shields to Knaresborough-really easy down A1. Arrived early as always like to "dump" overnight bag at reception and go off and use the facilities prior to 3pm check in. Reception very welcoming and helpful, showed us through to Leisure/Spa area where met by friendly and helpful Spa guy. We were impressed with the size, quality and cleanliness of the facilities-which are as portrayed on the website. Using the gym first, we found it had everything you could need when exercising on a short break and particularly enjoyed the benefit of 3 screens with subtitles, so we could read along while pedalling away! After a shower, we took advantage of ordering light lunch from the smaller bar menu [plenty to choose from though and very reasonable pricing] and although the bar area is really pretty, we chose to eat it in the lounge/reading area to the rear of the bar [which is actually overlooking the front gardens].We then made full use of everything poolside [delightful] and took the opportunity to chill for 15mins in the Spa Guest Only "lounge" whilst awaiting our therapists. My daughter enjoyed an exfoliation and facial, while I endulged in an aroma-bath followed by body massage. Both of us were extremely pleased with the treatments, expertise and professionalism of the 2 therapists [thanks again girls!]. Formally checking-in after our treatments we found our way to our room without the need for the offered help and were pleasantly suprised at the generous squarefootage and content of the room. Very clean and lovely decor. Evening meal in Storm restaurant was another positive experience-3 courses [with around 5 choices at each] and the wine list was well priced to suit all "wallets". Service was excellent-non-obtrusive whilst observing when the guest may need assistance. The food was really tasty and we felt unrushed even though we were late sittings.
Afetr a very comfortable nights sleep, we took the opportunity to enjoy the gym and spa facilities again, before a most generous breakfast, which was again served by the staff from the evening before, with the same dedication, courtesy and care.
Check out was seamless and faultless and we were grateful for the receptionists continued friendliness and attention to whether we had enjoyed our stay-we were sad it was at an end!
Although the Dower House is smaller than it appears in photographs and there were a few "rough around the edges" in the main building [few cracks and tiny bits of missing plaster, bit of an issue with the sash window in our room etc] it is exceptional value even at normal price and if you look for bargains-which we got [£138 for Sunday Spa special including 2 x 30min treatments, eveing meal and breakfast!] you really are on to a winner!
This hotel, although under the Best Western umbrella, is actually owned by a "family", who have a few other hotels. they must be very proud of their buildings and especially of their staff. I already have another booking here in May and cant wait!

Room Tip: I dont think you could go wwrong in any of them!

We only booked the night before we went, choosing this hotel because of availability, price and the fact it has a Spa. Check in was from 3pm but we arrived early as wanted to look around the town so called at reception just to let them know our car was in the car park but we were going to be residents. The receptionist was on the phone, from the conversation it was clearly a wedding party enquiry, and we stood waiting for 10 minutes (literally!) and she didn't even raise her head to acknowledge us so we gave up and went exploring, not a very good first impression! When we returned later on, no hassles regarding the car and the check in was fine and friendly. The hotel is very old and this is evident throughout from rickety floors which creak and bow in places to the tired state of the rooms, well certainly the one we stayed in anyway. Basic, clean but very small with 70's style tiling in the bathroom. The shower looked about as old as the hotel and water just dribbled out, should have showered in the Spa! It's been a long time since we stayed in a hotel which still has the old Yale key lock as opposed to modern key cards, for example. We booked a time for the restaurant when we checked in and booked for breakfast, receiving a good discount for breakfast with booking in advance! The Spa was also tired but sufficient for a small hotel and we spent a couple of hours lounging by the tiny pool but enjoyed free use of sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and foot spas, sadly for me there was no availability for any beauty treatments as were all booked up. When we were choosing a hotel to stay at, the dinner menu was important as we wanted a romantic and special meal and the Dower A la carte menu promised to deliver according to the website but we were offered only a small printed piece of paper to choose from which was all they had. We did enquire regarding the a la carte but the foreign waiter told us there was only this menu other than the bar menu which was very disappointing although the food was very delicious when delivered. Bar prices were reasonable but wine and water with the meal a tad expensive in comparison. When in our room, which was clearly above the dining room and bar area, we could clearly hear the music playing so if there's a function on, I imagine sleep might be at a premium! Every time someone walked past our room, every floor board creaked and groaned and we could clearly hear next door moving about their room, plugging things in etc, at least we couldn't hear what they were talking about! The hotel was fine, nothing special in my opinion but ideally situated for a mooch around Knaresborough and fabulous if you want to visit Mother Shipton's cave, literally a couple of minutes walk away. Breakfast was lovely, the usual cereals, fruit etc and then a menu of cooked items to choose from. Check out was good, we'd been charged twice for breakfast but as soon as we pointed this out, the bill was amended without issue. To summarise, a small, old and tired hotel which serves lovely food. Good for an overnight stay if on a budget....would I stay again, no I'm afraid I don't think I would although would dine in their restaurant without hesitation.

Room Tip: We asked for a room with a view but with this being a small hotel, this was just of the small garden...

Excellent Service, Good Company and outstanding food, the leisure centre added to the break as did the Log Fires, Afternoon Teas and general ambiance of the hotel.
