We had a really nice break at this hotel. OK, the carpets were a little worn in places and some of the decor could do with updating but in terms of value for money it was extremely good value. We had a very tasty cooked breakfast each morning and the staff were very friendly and accomodating. The hotel is in a very good position for exploring the surrounding district and Knaresborough had a reasonable selections of pubs and restaurants for evening entertainment. The spa was also a very pleasant retreat after a hard days sightseeing.

We came here to have a spa day and we were not disappointed. The staff we very friendly and nothing was too much for them. The facilities were fantastic and by the end of our day there we were so relaxed we were nearly asleep. I would recommend going there for a spa day and having a treatment there. Will definitelygo back again.

Thank you for making it a fantastic birthday for my sister

Stayed here before and never disappointed. The staff are lovely and can't do enough for you. The restaurant food and breakfasts are excellent, tasty and well presented. Dogs are made welcome and there is a park with riverside walks right next door to the hotel.

We have just stayed for a weekend here, and were rather disappointed. The location is perfect. However, when a local friend rang on our behalf and asked for the room rate they were quoted one price and when we rang directly five minutes later we were quoted £35 per night more. When I informed the receptioninst of this fact she brought down the price by £25 per night. First black mark. The other big disappointment was that the water pressure in our room was so low that taking a shower was almost symbolic, and to make matters worse it took an age for the hot water to arrive (within the trickle). Plus points, the staff were friendly and welcoming, the gardens are beautiful. However, my overall impression is of a guest house pretending to be a hotel and charging prices on a whim. "Could do better" is my overall conclusion, actually could do a lot better because this is a place with enormous potential, although this weekend that potential was not fulfilled.

Knaresborough must be the most dog friendly town ever. Fantastic – and no, there isn’t poo everywhere as there are lots of poo bins! Matching the town in this respect, I believe that The Dower House is also unbelievably dog friendly. They allow dogs in the hotel, even in the bedrooms. Does it smell of dogs – No. Does it look very dirty due to dogs – No. I had originally asked for a quiet room. We were given one, but it was miles away from the car park and had no view. I don’t actually take my dogs into hotels, they sleep in the car and so, as I had read about special rooms for persons with dogs opening directly outside without going through the hotel, I asked about these. We were shown the rooms. They are directly off the car park. They were very small, but perfectly adequate, however, the hotel desperately needs some TLC. I thought someone had spilt coffee down the curtains, but it was just that the curtains had gone brown with heat from the radiator which they covered. The correct plug was missing from the sink (leaving a gaping hole which hubby lost the cap of the toothpaste down), the remote from the tv didn’t work and the carpets are rather worn and stained in places. The room was, however, clean, and we could park the car directly outside the bedroom window, so keeping a very close eye on the dogs. The rooms were very noisy during the day as the hotel is just off a busy main road, however, this road quietened down beautifully at night, so this was not a problem. The receptionists were extremely friendly and helpful, they recommended The General Tarleton pub/restaurant which was excellent. The restaurant was a different matter. We went down for breakfast the first morning. There was already a couple waiting to be seated. They had been waiting quite a while they said. We waited for quite a while longer. Still no one appeared, so eventually we knocked on the kitchen door. We were then seated. We ordered breakfast. I have to say that I believe that the breakfast here was the worst I have had in any hotel. There was cheddar and Wensleydale cheese. No ham, no nice fresh bread. There were bananas, apples, melon, oranges and grapes and some tinned fruits, and some cerials. There were also some not very fresh pastries. The cooked breakfast was diabolical. The fried bread was chewy rather than crisp, the black pudding and bacon burnt and dry and the scrambled eggs were so overcooked they were just strings of white rubber. The following morning I had cheese and pastries, the pastry not being much better.

Pity the food was so bad as the hotel is in a great location, just off the town centre and a very short distance from the river where there are several lovely walks. As I have read other reviews that say the food is good, I wonder if we were just unlucky with the chef on those two nights we stayed.

Also as paid with Tesco tokens, believe this was very expensive for the standard . I think the price was £125 per night.

Room Tip: Rooms 1 and 2 excellent if you have a dog - opens directly on to car park.

I stayed here recently for several days midweek and was pleased with the overall experience. The vast majority of staff were friendly, polite and efficient, and although I agree with previous reviewers that some of the decor is somewhat dated, I found the hotel to be clean and of good repair throughout. The pool temperature was spot on, too, which so always a bonus!

The restaurant is of a decent standard, if a little pricey in terms of the set menu. Breakfast was fantastic, however, and the staff were flexible to special requests at all mealtimes. Overall a nice couple of nights' stay, thank you to the staff.
