We have just returned from the Dower House Hotel after we had booked the two day special offer which included ,dinner & breakfast. We wanted to have a relaxing weekend,a romantic break in the beautiful market Town of Knaresborough.

We were quite happy with the facilities of the health centre and enjoyed the sauna and jacuzzi. The room was on the small side and bizzarely had holes in the side of the bed not a problem seeing that the lounge seemed a nice place to sit and the bar was cosy.

The Restaurant let the hotel down & dont be fooled by all the stars and awards. The food was boring and bland and the veg seemed to be microwaved and raw....the waitress rushed us and our food appeared straight away. Iit took 45 mins to eat a three course meal, wine and coffee. A mild complaint but when you are spending and being tricked into £80 a meal or £120 per night who is fooling who which seems such a shame for a 3 star hotel.

Hey Ho thats rip off britain for you........

We stayed here after a wedding and was impressed for the most part.

On arrival the staff were professional, and we managed to get into our room earlier than requested, which was much appreciated. Much to my surprise we were put in a 'room' at the back of the Hotel, which was actually a small house in a garden area. It was just a room with small entrance and bathroom, but it was very nice, and I'd say it would be perfect for someone looking for something a bit more romantic (it was Room 33 by the way if you want to ask for it).

Due to time constraints I didn't see any other parts of the hotel, but all seemed good.

The only letdown was a rather sad breakfast, which I'd have been unhappy with if I'd been looking for something solid.

Finally feel clean after staying at this place - had a shower as soon as I got home. We had quite an interesting room with beams etc, but the bathroom was grim, horrid vinyl flooring, and dirty shower curtain which had a habit of clinging to your body. There was also a lingering smell in the room - couldn't quite place it but I think "foisty" is a good description. The pool was out of order, which we didn't discover until we got to the leisure complex, nobody had bothered to tell us when we checked in. We asked for a discount which was refused. This annoyed me as it was the only reason we chose this hotel over other nearby ones.

The food in the restaurant was ok, although the service was bizarre. Nobody seemed to know any answers to any questions, e.g can we choose any wine from the wine list on a DBB package. "I'll go check" - but never told us! There were three couples and three waiting staff but still we had to specifically ask, "can we have some drinks please", and our starter arrived even before they had taken our drinks order.

Strange place, needs urgent overhaul, would not stay again.

We paid £100 for B and B in this hotel but it was very disappointing and certainly not worth the money. The room was very small , unappealing and with venetian blinds at the window which did not work properly. The bed was small and the bathroom had seen much better times eg. old fittings, mould stains around the bath and old drill holes still in view. The bedroom desperately needed a makeover and I have stayed in much bigger, more homely rooms for a good deal less than £100. It has to be said that the Reception lady was excellent and the overall service in the Restaurant was very good. Our evening meal was worth the money that we paid but the breakfast was again disappointing - as if they were cutting down on portions and with a poor buffet selection. All in all, the hotel is in a pleasant location, the staff are very helpful but to be charged £100 for B and B is a rip off.

The rooms were very small for a 3 star hotel no passing space at all. The restaurant got our meals wrong on one night and the next night kept us sitting in the lounge for an hour while other guests who were booked in after us had there meals. i complained to the manager and all I got was a 'sorry but we are full' just not good enough. This does not compare with other Best Western hotels I have stayed at so my advise is to drive past it and go somewhere else.

The web site, referring to the rooms, states that 'each retains its own mark of style and individuality'. Our room was a bog-standard chain hotel room, the like of which we have stayed in many times all around the world. It was in need of refurbishment and was very bland, with acres of cream wall relieved only by 2 small pictures.

The restaurant was also rather bland, and draughty too, serving small portions of 'food art'. The quality was OK, but to charge extra for vegetables is a bit cheeky as the food is not cheap.

On a more positive note, the staff were friendly and helpful.

The hotel comes across on the web site as being upmarket, but the reality is rather different.

After the debarcle with our booking on a previous occasion the manager offered us a complimentary stay which we took up. The hotel has some strong points but is missing the mark in other ways.

The room was small but reasonably well apointed. The bathroom was dated and the toilet blocked twice during our 2 night stay. The room that my mother had was of a much better size with much more modern decor, I can only guess that there is an ongoing modernisation programme and that we were unlucky with our room.

The reception staff were excellent during the day and wholly useless at night. We returned from a stroll around the town and spent 10 minutes knocking on the desk and calling out "hello" before we were able to get our key. On the second night, after 5 minutes of similar activity we went behinfd the counter and got the key ourselves. This concerned us as the reception staff were in the office about six feet away, just too engrossed in conversation to bother to deal with guests. It also concerned us as any tom, dick or harry could have taken the key and stolen from the rooms.

The pool is not large but is pleasant enough although be careful in the jacuzzi, it was dangerously hot on one day during our stay.

The restaurant was dissapointing, I don't know how it won the awards that it claims. The food was bland and not of a quality to warrant the price. The service was slow, although better at dinner than at breakfast. At dinner there was a passable immitation of silver service but at breakfast there was none of this. I asked for some marmite and it took 30 minutes to ascertain that there wasn't any.

The manager of the hotel is obviously interested in customer service, unfortunately the rest of his staff have a lot to learn. I thank the manager for his courtesy and hope that he is able to mould his staff in such a manner as to make this hotel fulfill its full potential.
