“A Warm welcome”
Reviewed 15 June 2014 via mobile

We have just stayed here again for the great Knaresborough bed race. We stayed last year for 2 nights but could only manage the Saturday night this year.

We were welcomed warmly & given room 2 which is on the corner looking into the market square. It was clean & comfortable & served it purpose.

IT IS WHAT IT IS
It's a pub (& a lively 1 at that on a weekend ) but It's a good pub in the middle of Knaresborough with rooms.

If you want the Ritz then book the Ritz but your not going to get 5* for £60 a night including breakfast. (Excellent breakfast)

After a long day in the sun enjoying the atmosphere of the bed race I fell asleep listening to the load music.

Every chance we will be back next year.

Booked room weeks in advance, was not told about a live band that was playing that evening. We were shown to room to be told they had no key to lock the door and our belongings would be ok left in the room (with no locked door from the bar to our room) was not willing to take the chance with over a thousand pounds worth of laptops. So walked back to the car to lock them away. Forty minuets later still no key! Went out for tea, came back to live band blazing until 23:00 then noise from the pub until 01:00! No heating on, rooms where badly maintained and in need of money spending on them and found hairs in beds.
In the morning went downstairs told landlord we would not be having breakfast and we would only pay half his asking rate as we were not told of the band on booking. To be fare to landlord he was a gentleman never grumbled and agreed to our request and wished us a good day a nice guy I feel just would have been nice to have been told of band.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra and read a few reviews first.

I stayed here with a group of 6 couples who fully took up the hotel rooms. Me and my boyfriend got given room 5 which was a single. The room was really basic with uncomfortable beds & not much room. Bathroom was average with a tiny shower and I couldn't believe how thin the walls were. We could hear everything from the other rooms. Wouldn't go back.

My husband and I booked in here for one night after staying in York the previous night. What a completely different experience. We had paid £90 B&B to stay in York at a pub with boutique bedrooms and it was spotlessly clean and worth every penny. As they were full on the following night we decided to go to Knaresborough. The Market Tavern was the only place we could find with availability and, rather stupidly, I didn't look at any reviews before booking. This room costs us £60 B&B so we weren't expecting luxury. When we arrived the girl who showed us to our rooms was perfectly pleasant but the pub downstairs smelled of dogs and cigarettes. The room the girl showed us into smelled the same and was absolutely filthy, the carpet was black with dirt and the shower had dirty marks and hairs in the base. The sheets were not very clean and also had hairs on them. I could not bear to even sit on the bed never mind sleep in it. We realised there was no point in saying anything as we could not have stayed in the pub after this and we had already paid. We took our belongings and left immediately. I have never had to leave anywhere like this before and if the experience has taught me anything it is to check reviews before parting with our money!

Room Tip: I doubt there is a good room

I booked online and the confirmation clearly stated that I had booked a double room for single occupancy.
Upon arrival I was presented with a twin room. The landlord was summoned to deal with the issue and his attitude was immediately hostile and rude. He made no apology or offer of recompense despite the proof in front of him that I had booked a double room. A small gesture of goodwill would have gone a long way but none was forthcoming.
I did at least get my money back but that's scant consolation when I needed to find a bed for the night at short notice.

We have visited Knaresborough on different occasions and looked at this pub which through the day is quiet and popular with families. Our room was shabby to say the least. The bathroom was awful, smelt damp and the walls were covered in damp. We also had the added bonus of a snail on the door frame! As we were only staying for one night we decided it would do and set out to find a decent pint as the range of beers was limited to one bitter. On returning we could hardly believe our eyes! The disco was so loud - we had not seen anywhere that there was one, we tried to get to the door that led to our rooms but another table had been put near the door making it difficult to get through. The music was so loud that the doors were vibrating in the frames and the floor boards too. To make it worse our room was at the back and above where the smokers stood. The screaming and swearing was disgusting and continued until gone 1 in the morning even though the disco stopped at 12.30. When we used our shower in the morning - there was no handle on the shower door so was unable to close the door properly. Most of the water ran out of the shower flex rather than the shower head. The extractor fan did not work which will account for damp as there is no window in the bathroom. It's only good points are that it is central knaresborough and the breakfast was lovely and served by friendly waitress. I am even more annoyed that am unable to
Leave my review on the website that I booked through! We stayed in room 4 - if anyone else stays there have a look to see if the snail is still there!
