We stayed for a family birthday for one night. We stayed in two rooms, one within the main building and one of the family rooms in the courtyard. The rooms were lovely, beds very big and comfortable and despite a few minor points like the internal phone not working and the tv being a little wobbly in the family room, we were happy enough with our choice.

We were not so happy with breakfast which took 50 minutes to come after we had ordered (we did not make any unreasonable demands, just three Yorkshire breakfasts) the other half of our party who were on the next table waited even longer than this with their coffee and toast going cold.

The worst part was having to wait half an hour of being fobbed off by the host whist trying to pay! Some other guests were also stood outside complaining that they had been told to go away because they were too busy to take their money. When we were eventually seen to we were not asked how our stay was and once the card was put in the machine she walked off!

We travel a lot and have never written a review but felt compelled to write this one. Overall this is a very nice hotel, very comfortable rooms, but the service was not what we expected.

Room Tip: The rooms in the main building were better

We stayed here on the way to and from the Lake District. Room 11 is a well equipped and comfortable family room, with ample space for two adults and two young children; heavy drapers were welcome and helped keep the kids asleep :)
The owner is very hospitable and an excellent cook; the choice of breakfast fare is considerable and includes a variety of cooked dishes in addition to home-made preserves and fruit compotes.
We'll be stopping here again, if and when we're passing through or visiting the region.

We spent one night here during an anniversary trip, and had everything we could have wanted, and more. Denise has a beautiful home, and is a wonderful, welcoming host. Our room was lovely, clean, full of all that anyone could need, and we had a sound nights sleep in the extremely comfortable bed. Breakfast was also great, and we left very happy with the intention of staying again next time we visit this beautiful town.

We stayed two nights in July. The hostess is delightful, and the breakfasts excellent, however the room (newly commissioned. room 9) was disappointing in size and comfort. A standard double and a pinched ensuite. The shower cubicle is a struggle for a 6 foot man. Road noise a factor, and the duvet not big enough. My wife was cold and struggled for cover. Perfectly good for £60 a night but the price is £95 and represents poor value

Although I am sorry these guests were unhappy with their stay at Newton House, it is upsetting that they have chosen to give us such a bad review (the only ‘poor’ review out of the 104 reviews Newton House has received) with an average rating of 2, rather than to bring their problems to our attention during their stay as they were invited to.

During the three months this new room has been in operation we have received nothing but compliments with other guests commenting on how comfortable the bed is and how much they like the room. The shower-room is compact, but again we have received only compliments (and we have had several other six-foot tall men as guests).

When these guests checked in I pointed out that the duvet (a double duvet for a standard double bed) was very light in weight as the filling is goose down. The bed did, however, also have a king-sized quilted throw, and two blankets were provided.

We do ask guests if they have a problem to bring it to our immediate attention so that we can try and do something about it. These guests were given every opportunity to do this as I made a point of personally talking to them on the first morning of their stay. If they had told us they had a serious problem, we would have changed the duvet for a winter-weight king-size one.

As Newton House is in the centre of Knaresborough there is a certain amount of noise from the road. When booking guests are normally told the position of the room(s) we have available so they can make a choice. This room does have its original 18thC wooden shutters (as do several other rooms). They are very effective in cutting out noise – I speak from personal experience as I have slept in this room myself and I am a very light sleeper. However, I am aware that the traffic noise could be disturbing for some guests so I am currently trialling a selection of ear-plugs with a view to having these available for guests should they require them.

Newton House is a 12-bedroomed, 4-star highly commended guest house and £95 is our room rate for a standard double room inc English breakfast and VAT. Being VAT registered we lose 20% of our room rate to the tax man. I don’t know of anywhere else in Knaresborough, or Harrogate, where a comparable room could be found for £60 a night at a weekend in July as even 3-star B&Bs (that are not VAT registered) charge c £75 a night.

These guests have also given us a rating of ‘3’ for cleanliness when we consistently get ‘5’s. I note that they have not mentioned this in their review and both myself and my housekeeping staff are puzzled as to why they have given us this rating.

We had a very enjoyable stay, despite the weather. The room was very comfortable (huge bed), the breakfast was delicious and we were made to feel very welcome.

Room Tip: The room was excellent but as it was not attached to the house i'm not sure how warm it would be...
