“GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY”
Reviewed 27 July 2013

We have just returned from a few days at the White Rose. The bedrooms were basic, but very clean and tidy, comfy beds and plenty of tea and coffee. Thanks to the domestic staff.

Michelle (Sybil) is just the Fountain of all Knowledge on the surrounding areas to visit. She is an asset to this hotel.

Credit must also go to the chef who produced really good hot food and well presented.

We will visit again.

Room Tip: We preferred the rear of the hotel, less noise from the road, but good views of the trains.

Just returned from a three night stay, the room was very clean, staff were excellent couldn't have been more helpful, breakfast was very nice and the restaurant meals were excellent, the steak night was very good value for money. Will definitely stay again and recommend to family and friends.

When I visited The White Rose Hotel, I was part of a large group of people that had pre-booked a table at their Restaurant. It was an evening when there was a Chinese buffet on. We found the Management extremely rude and unhelpful. We had booked a table for 8 O Clock, and when we got there, noone welcomed us, we had to ask what to do, then a waitress said you can't help yourself until you've paid. The food was half empty, nothing was labelled and food that we had asked for in advance would be available on the day, wasn't. We had to ask ourselves for new food to be put out in order that there was enough for all of us, there were no plates out and again we had to ask for these. There was also a grievance with decorations on the table which had been prearranged with the "Owner" although this is not 100% as the same man on the day refused to decorate as he had confirmed it would be and witheld the decorations until we had finished our meal. All in all a dissapointing, and unpleasant experience. Considering there was so many of us, you would think Customer Service would have been above and beyond with the amount of money we were paying but sadly this establishment lacked in it considerably, and I doubt they even understand the meaning of the word. None of the people who attended the meal would return to The White Rose again.

We have just returned from a two day break at the White Rose and after reading a couple of nit picking reviews . I think they are very unfair. We found the staff very friendly and Michelle could not be more helpful she does her utmost to make sure everyone has a excellent break, unlike most places who could not care less after you pay your money. The room was clean and tidy facilities very good and I dont think your body cares about the colour of the bath as long as it gets you clean; The meals were excellent value and presented well If we could pick a place to stay out of our last 4 breaks this would be it .We will be returning for another two breaks this year so we would highly recommend The White Rose So to all you nit pickers out there GET A LIFE.

spent a good three nights here, room was basic but clean and quiet, bathroom needed updating but had a good window so we could see the trains. hairdryer, iron, tea & coffee was adequate, the bed was clean and we both slept well. breakfast was good but a shortage of mushrooms. bar meals were too pricey and too big so our money was spent elsewhere on meals. why don't they cater for small appetites anymore. one sandwich these days does the two of us, their hot sandwiches are good but too big, half the quantity and the price and the money could have been spent on site. we dont want food thats played with and pretty, just the basic will do. a smaller OAP dinner like in Bedale was wonderful. good place to see the steam railway, well worth a trip, just 5 min walk round the corner, and not too far from Wesleydale Wallace and Grommit cheese factory. another good trip. close to the A1 so easy to find, definitely worth a second visit

Room Tip: any room facing the railway

I find it difficult to rate this hotel as there are so many good points but certainly some negative issues too. To be fair I would have chosen Good but I don't have that option, and Very Good doesn't allow for the negatives.

We had a two night stay on a deal. For the price we paid it was good. The staff are friendly and very welcoming. The rooms are very clean and include a trouser press, fan, iron & board (located in wardrobe), tea/coffee making, soap dispensers in bathroom, lots of hot water, flat screen tv and free Wi-Fi. The breakfasts were cooked to order and were very good. The deal included £10 each towards an evening meal from the main menu and a bottle wine. We ordered the duck breast which was well cooked & presented. The restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere. We have eaten here on a previous occasion, with young children, and we all felt it was very good.

Now for the reservations - we stayed during a very hot time and naturally had the windows open. Unfortunately our room overlooked the road and early morning traffic started around 5am. This was after not getting to sleep until midnight due to music coming from another guest's room. But must emphasise that our request to be moved to a room away from the road was dealt with very well and pleasantly and we had a better night's sleep in a room towards the back. They stored our luggage safely and took it up to the new room.

The rooms are in need of a refurb although the furniture is in good order. A few issues with carpet in the bathroom - not ideal in a hotel! A shelf for toiletries would be handy. The coloured suites should have been discarded years ago! Unfortunately the first bathroom reeked of smoke presumably due to an uncaring previous guest. Perhaps clearer signs for No Smoking in rooms are needed.

My main concern is with the electrics & sockets. I noticed PAT labels on some of the electrical components in the main areas & corridors, although couldn't read the dates. I didn't see any in the two rooms. In the first room there were very few viable sockets. Only one of the bedside lamps worked as there was no socket to plug in the other one! The only double socket was located across the room and near the floor. Into this we had to plug the kettle - on the floor as the flex didn't reach - and any other electrical equipment. We realised only one socket was usable - the other being damaged. This severely limited the use of other electricals e.g. hairdryer, phone charger. The wall mounted mirror was situated so you couldn't use the hairdryer in front of it - a criminal offence in the eyes of most women!!

The second room faired a little better in that both bedside lamps were plugged into an extension gang behind the bed. But the strange arrangement elsewhere was another matter. There were 3 sockets located on the wall but none worked. The tv, kettle, phone charger and any hairdrying equipment used were plugged into another extension gang located hanging from the tv wire! See photo. Umm I think there are serious safety issues here which should be addressed!

Overall a good stay - great staff, very good restaurant, some room issues. Good base for exploring north Yorkshire as close to connecting roads.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms at front

Just returned from a 2 night break at this hotel. The room was basic but very clean. It could have done with a shelf in the bathroom to put toiletries on. Food was very good first night but not on our second night. Staff were friendly.
