We had stayed over a year ago which was largely a positive experience and we were looking forward to our stay
First the positives - beautiful and historic building - oak panelling, oil paintings adorn the walls and fireplaces you could roast a venison in. The rooms were clean (if a little dated and in need of investment / refurb) and the room cleaning service was efficient and friendly.

....this visit didn't deliver in any other respect - each trip to the bar (in the beautiful oak panelled bar) was met with a 'oh sorry we've run out' or a 'just need to get some more glasses/ ice cubes/ wine'. Breakfast didn't deliver on promise, the continental breakfast was good quality but was largely gone and not replenished - this with around 1 hour and 20 guests remaining to be fed before the alloted breakfast time finished. We were informed that the toaster was broken and we would need to 'wait' for toast yet people who arrived behind us seemed to receive theirs first? The front of house experience was generally lack lustre - neither unwelcoming or welcoming but appearing inexperienced and in many situations invisible....
The building was also overheated - theweather was fairly clement for the time of year but the heating was working overtime.....why? Overall not an experience i would want to repeat.

It is a beautiful building in a lovely setting and as it was Mother's Day we were looking forward to a special lunch. There were 4 mums and we travelled from different parts of the UK, mostly over 100 miles away, to spend time together. I'm sorry to say it was a huge disappointment. We waited about 45 minutes to be seated, and although our starters came quite quickly, the service was extremely slow thereafter. The staff didn't appear to have received any training, so there was no order to the clearing of plates, no apology for the wait, very long waits for requests to be processed, etc etc. I have never received such poor service. The table near us left early, refusing to pay as they were so disgusted with the quality of the service. The food was quite nice when it did eventually arrive, although we didn't really have enough vegetables. There was an interminable wait between every course and we felt completely abandoned. The dining room was empty long before our desserts arrived and the waiting staff seemed to have done a disappearing act. We negotiated a reduced bill but I doubt we'll ever go back.

Arrived around tea time on Saturday evening . We found our way to the unmanned reception area and despite ringing the bell- waited and waited until we managed to catch someone's attention and the receptionist came hurrying through- very apologetic.
We were given our room key and directed to our room.
The building has some lovely original features - lots of wood paneling leaded windows big fire placed.
We went upstairs to or room along the galleried landing and through the large wooden doors- all very nice,,
Unfortunately the inside of our room didn't reflect the outside- whilst everything was clean and tidy it was all very dated and was lacking...
The bathroom had been revamped in parts but had an old looking electric shower that trickled out rather than blasted out,,
We had drinks in the downstairs bar- lots of lovely comfy seats and it was refreshing to notice a few of the staff were of the older end and we discovered had worked at the hotel for years.
The guy who ran the restaurant was lovely and friendly and the dining hall had a lovely ambience about it.
I was a little disappointed with my starter more cheese would have been nice and my partners soup could have been hotter but my main course of steak was delicious and service was definitely with a smile!
Neither of us slept particularly well- the bed was a little springy and we were woken fairly early by the sound of lots of bottles been emptied into the bin.
BreAkfast was ok - nothing wrong with the service but there were no glasses available for the juice( got some when asked) and if you wanted coffee you had to get your own but tea was brought to your table.
In the cold light of day it was apparent that this hotel would really benefit from a cash injection- it has the potential to be a fantastic hotel with staff who are clearly loyal and enjoy working here-it is set in lovely grounds and with investment it would be Brilliant.
I would definitely say visit but don't expect a 5 star experience instead expect good service and good value and appreciate what could be with a much needed cash boost .

We stayed at Monk Fryston for two nights on a special deal via Travelzoo. We were given a free upgrade to a Superior room, and I have to say that I would not fancy a Standard room if this was Superior.
The first thing that we noticed was that the bathroom door would not stay closed. Not the end of the world admittedly, but when we mentioned it to reception, it was clear that this was a long-standing problem that had simply not been fixed. A five-minute job for a maintenance man.
Next came the heating. The radiator was blasting out full belt all day (and night), and the thermostat valve on the radiator just spun around without any effect. Again, when we mentioned it, it was admitted to being a known problem. A new valve would put things right as well as saving money. Instead, we had to have the window open all the time, and traffic noise is quite loud. Other reviews have commented on the dining room being too hot, so this is clearly an area they need to address.
The building is very old, but even so, there are areas which are simply tatty. The window sills are crumbling (see photo) and whilst this does not affect the inside, it just looks bad. The bathroom was very dated and badly finished (see photo).
Our deal included an evening meal, and this was quite good. Dining room staff are cheerful and attentive. Breakfasts are a choice of a buffet and cooked breakfast, although the buffet is somewhat limited (see photo). The dining room is quite impressive though, as is most of the interior, with lots of wood paneling and comfy seating. There is a small bar, but finding someone to serve you can take time. If you want real ale, you need to go to the nearby pub in the village, but be aware that this is closed on Sunday evenings.
Outside, there are extensive grounds of lawn and woodland, well worth a stroll through. In the woods are several small lakes, and a number of timber bridges. One of these is an unusual covered bridge with paintings and verses from The Ancient Mariner (see photos). Although the bridge is briefly mentioned in a local guide to the Hotel, the management should make more of such an unusual feature instead of just hoping that people will stumble across it.
Last point......when we checked-out, the bill showed a £20 per night charge for the 'free' upgrade, which had to be taken off, so check bills carefully.

Room Tip: Ask for a Superior room. The main road nearby can be quite noisy, even at night,

We have had many family lunches at the restaurant that it appeared the perfect setting for our wedding!
We had a civil ceremony in the Haddon room, followed by our reception, it was perfect, the staff were all very kind attentive and helpful! The bridal suite is a beautiful spacious room with fabulous views! We thoroughly enjoyed our time there!

We were en route to a family wedding in Scotland and decided to pause for a night thanks to Travelzoo; Monk Fryston Hall Hotel was very easy to get to. All the staff were delightful, and the supper was very good, as was the breakfast. Although I have to agree that the temperature in the dining room was rather fierce. Our room was comfortable enough, although slightly dated - having to clamber into a bath and unroll the bathmat to have a shower is not one of my favourite activities.

I have just come back from a 4 night stay on a residential course. The hotel was very clean and comfortable, historic with amazing grounds with a river and plenty of wildlife. I was in the newer part and if I went again I would ask to be in the older part. My room was perfectly nice but some of the other rooms looked amazing. The staff were super friendly and helpful and totally unphased by a group of 15. Our course was in a beautiful wood panel room with walk in fireplace. There was always an abundance of refreshments and nothing was too much trouble. The spanish waiter was great fun and very helpful to our group at mealtimes. I would happily stay again. I didn't see a fitness centre and didn't order room service so I haven't rated them.

Room Tip: Ask for one in the old part
