History seems to have bypassed this castle. Not much English/Scottish history took place here but its worth a visit as its quite intact and the views are tremendous. A tad on the pricey side and a tacky gift shop(but aren’t most National Trust properties) but a diverting couple of hours, the staff are friendly and it wasn't over busy.

I went to Richmond Castle on an afternoon in November with my 14 year old daughter, we both really enjoyed it. The views from the top of the keep are simply stunning both of the surrounding countryside and Richmond itself, you get an excellent birds eye view of the town and how it has developed in terms of its physical layout and age of buildings plus you can see all the other landmarks: towers, churches, the old railway station, market place and the meanders of the river Swale.

Although the walls are crumbling in places there are many nooks and crannies to explore which my daughter certainly did, I think she enjoyed doing the things that children are supposed to do. There are also the remain of some buildings within the castle walls which we also explored using the guide book to add more information as we went.

The indoor exhibition is very good and my daughter was fascinated by the information on the objectors to the War who were imprisoned in the cells at the castle as she is studying GCSE 20th century history.

Definitely worth spending some time at the castle if you are visiting the town for the first time.

The castle is above the River Swale and next to the market square in the centre of Richmond. It is surrounded by a high wall with crumbling turrets and a tower that can be climbed. I was there on a clear day when it was possible to see for miles over to the Vale of York.
The central area of the castle is grassed and there are a few benches. There is a nice scenic walk round the outside of the walls - mostly a level walk but a few steep cobbles.
The castle was in use into the 20th century. The castle used to contain army barracks (now removed). Conscientious objectors were once detained here.
The castle is run by English Heritage and in summer it opens daily, closing at 6:00 pm.
There is a small gift shop at the entrance/exit. There is little information on display around the castle - I'd recommend buying a guide book to get more information.
