“Lovely mini break”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

We visited Millgate House as a family group of 7, plus baby grandchild. We were made to feel very welcome and at ease in this lovely small hotel. The sitting room and dining room are delightful and the breakfasts are excellent.

Room Tip: All the rooms where nice, if possible a room looking south over the garden would be a preference.

At extremely short notice, we arrived at the elegant Millgate House and were warmly welcomed by Austin and Tim. Their home is awash with carefully chosen antiques, books, paintings and plants and is a feast for the senses. After spending the night in a comfortable bed with clean white cotton sheets, we enjoyed a delicious and healthy breakfast, accompanied by some hauntingly lovely classical music, along with some entertaining banter with our hosts. Vases of freshly cut sweet peas added a special touch to the tables, and the presence of three beautiful whippets, Mr Pip, Bosie and Misty, made it feel very homely. The garden is lovely, with many varieties of roses, clematis and hostas to enjoy. After just one night we felt we had made some new friends and are looking forward to visiting again in the future.

I review very few places not because I want to be unhelpful but simply I find it such a dreary exercise. My rule is I don't return to the ones disliked and only share the good ones amongst friends, being inherently selfish I don't wish to struggle booking a well discovered place because it's full of strangers whom have read my ramblings. THIS IS MY ONLY EXCEPTION

Tim and Oz are delightful , they appeal to my sensibilities, I enjoy intelligent conversation and respond to people whom I would describe as urbane. However I noticed they have the presence of mind to respond and adapt to each guest individually in a way that is most comfortable to that person. One can tell they have mastered the way they run Millgate.

I would judge my breakfast as comparable, perhaps not in variety but quality to one of the best oldest run family owned hotels in London. Kippers, sausages, bacon etc English food but also masses of soft fruit, heaps of well chosen Granola, muesli (Bircher if you want it), seeds and nuts Splendid smoked Salmon. One would not expect kidneys, salami, cheeses or such like in what is in essence a provincial B&B...the waste would be criminal....however the dogs would seize anything offered by the owners...dogs are well behaved and do not beg!......I did miss my freshly squeezed orange juice but made up for by perfect ground fresh coffee. Good food producers are used with abandon Bettys etc.

I felt instantly at home drinking Champagne in the drawing room, marvellous views of the waterfall, real books to read, real paintings to admire. although..don't be fooled the Fra Angelico in the dining room its only a 17th Century copy.

Bedroom was well furnished, good antiques, John Piper on the wall and as good views as I found in Cortona (but in an English way!). A proper bed with lots of space but I will not divulge the room number, as I will never be able to book it again!

I will leave tripadvisors to read about the gardens elsewhere......one of the best 30 private gardens admired by Monty Don, A Tichmarsh....probably Gertrude Jekyll if she wasn't dead! etc etc I found it perfumed, delightful to all the senses and probably the highlight on reflection

Room Tip: No..do your home work

After sometime, maybe 15 years returned for a weekend break. The garden even more beautiful and matured. Tim and Austin still charming hosts. Millgate is a quirky but delightful home filled with antiques and curios. Much better than a sterile posh hotel, the place has style and character. Comfortable beds, great views and serve an excellent breakfast to suit all appetites. We dined at the Local brassiere a minutes walk away, great meal. A place for garden lovers, watch this space Alan titchmarch.

We have just spent three days at Millgate House and it's almost impossible to describe what a wonderful place it is. Tim and Austin are warm and welcoming hosts and by the time we left we felt we had had a magical experience. The Georgian house is full of treasures and, as dog lovers, I include their three lovely whippets. Sitting in the dining room in the morning sun we were offered probably the most delicious breakfast you could imagine. Bowl after bowl of fresh fruits, nuts, muesli and other interesting cereals followed by an excellent choice of cooked items. The final treat was a tour of the garden which they have lovingly created over 35 years. Sitting in the late afternoon sun with a G&T was the icing on the cake. We were sorry to leave and wished we had been staying another couple of days. Go and stay, you're in for a real
treat.

Room Tip: Room 1 overlooks the garden and river with the sound of the waterfall in the distance. It's lar...

Once again we would like to thank so many appreciative guests who have gone to the trouble of writing with such enthusiatic originality about the house and the garden avoiding many of the cliches.
We are very thrilled that the garden has recently been filmed for a new series with Alan Titchmarsh in which he is looking to find Britain's 30 best private gardens run by enthusiasts...It is thanks to enthustiastic guests that we have made the short list.

Having been to Millgate House as frequent visitors in the past, we had not been to Yorkshire for nearly five years. When we paid a flying visit there this weekend, it felt like coming home.

The garden was resplendent, the house as vibrant as ever; Austin and Tim, and their charmingly efficient staff, remembered us, and within minutes of settling in, we were walking between the fragrant bowers of roses and honeysuckle, wondering why we had left it so long.
Next morning, taking breakfast in the charming dining room, we reckoned that a meal of this quality -were it available in a metropolitan hotel chain - might cost £25 per head.

Over a dozen fresh fruit dishes, half a dozen yogurts, nuts and seeds, freshly baked croissants, specialist cereals - that's just for starters. Sue's full English breakfast surpassed anything we'd ever eaten - underlining the fact that this beautiful house gives you an experience which restores you totally.

If you just want somewhere to crash out after a long drive, and you don't care about breakfast, good conversation and lovely surroundings - don't bother. Go to a chain that will give you a bed and a bathroom that looks like every other in every town. Pay forty pounds less and have a totally forgettable experience....

But if you want something worthwhile and special, in a place which will make a day feel like a week, provided by people who care about personal and high quality service - this is the place.

After a five year gap we indulged in another lovely stay at Millgate House and this time were able to see the beautiful garden in all its summer glory. Everything was the same high standard as before and we were looked after royally with a wonderful double bedroom and bathroom and a superb breakfast. Every comfort was provided in this gorgeous Georgian house right in the middle of Richmond, which itself is one of the delights of northern England. Can't wait for an excuse to return there and be spoilt again.

Room Tip: All the rooms are delightful
