As well as the fine decoration of all the rooms, the lounge area has a good selection of pictures
and paintings. The personal service from the owner and his staff could not be faulted, from the first meeting until booking out. Certainly the place to stay if visiting Richmond, very highly recommended by us both.

Stayed one cold night in February and got a warm welcome. The reception was well managed and directions were provided to access the hotel car park. The room was one of the best I have stayed in the UK, great bathroom! Had an enormous comfortable to spread out in. My room was not large as I opted for a cheaper room, but it was more than adequate and well appointed. One of the reasons for staying was the in house restaurant, unfortunately that day the kitchen had a major problem with a stove and was closed down for the day to effect repairs. Nevertheless the management suggested 3 restaurants and booked one for me. Even offered to drive me there, but I chose to walk. Use the lounge with the fireplace for an after dinner drink its very comfortable.
Breakfast was excellent try the eggs benedict with crispy prosciutto!
The hotel is within easy walk of the market square and attractions.
Would certainly recommend anyone planning to stay in this area to consider staying at the Frenchgate Hotel.

We found The Frenchgate completely by chance. How incredibly lucky we were. Needing somewhere quiet and comfortable to break up a long and arduous journey from North to South, we drove into Richmond and consulted TripAdvisor. It said The Frenchgate was the Number One Hotel in Richmond. Bound to be full we thought, but called anyway. A very cheerful and friendly voice seemed to understand our plight, said he only had the Bridal Suite available but we should come and he would look after us.
The Frenchgate is located in the prettiest street in Richmond and is a stunning regency building.
David Todd, the owner, met us with a warm smile and buckets of hospitality. His friendly, open nature made us feel welcome and looked-after as soon as we stepped through the door.
The room was like stepping back in time (in a very good way!), beautiful period decor (this part of the building is C15th or C16th), lovely antiques, bookshelves full of lovely reads and a magnificent four-poster bed - boot your usual canopied repro but a substantial wooden bed carved from an ancient tree. One felt as if you were lying in a luxurious, ancient forest!
We ended up staying 2 nights as the food, wine, service and David's hospitality were all exceptional. Beautiful breakfasts, early evening drinks by the fire in the lounge all amidst a good mix of antique and boutique modern design.
Richmond is a lovely place for walks and this hotel is a jewel. You will find it very hard to leave.

Stayed here for
Evening away in march.: we had a the Napoli suite with free standing bath and walk in monsoon shower and the biggest bed I have ever seen.:. Wow it was an amazing room and well worth the money. Such a understated yet luxury room in richmond and wouldn't stay anywhere else after staying here

From the moment I walked through the door the welcome was warm, genuine and sincere. The hotel is incredibly well decorated with the most comfortable room I have ever stayed in, and I have travelled the world extensively and stayed in many so called great hotels but this little gem in Richmond tops them all.
Bathroom facilities amazing with superb rain shower, heated floor tiles, fluffy towels and steam proof mirror. Breakfast next day again was excellent and indeed in my next visit I would dearly like to have an evening meal in the restaurant.

Room Tip: Have dinner in their restaurant!

We really enjoyed our 2 nights at this restaurant / hotel. The only real problem was external noise on Sunday morning. Some further measures to improve that would have given excellent review.

Food superb, service superb, room quirky but very good.

Would return which says all that is necessary.

Very welcoming staff and owner, friendly but professional. Had a lovely drink in front of the fire before an interesting and delicious meal. We stayed in the cottage room 2 doors up the road from the front entrance - cosy and private; and lack of shower was fine as we only stayed one night. The bath filled quickly and there was plenty of hot water.
