My husband booked the Frenchgate Hotel as a surprise for our 10th 1st date anniversary! (as you do!) :-) ...From arriving to leaving we had a thoroughly brilliant time. David the owner and his staff were very welcoming, attentive and friendly. We stayed in the Bridal suite which had a stunning 1.5 ton wooden four poster bed and beautiful furniture which blended in with the character of the hotel being built in 1650. The cosy air bath was nestled at the end of the bathroom with mood lighting and a new digital shower had just been installed at the opposite end of the bathroom. The food was absolutely beautiful and easy to see why has been awarded 2 Rosettes! I requested if it would be possible to have our meal in the room on the Saturday evening as it was Britains Got Talent final (well obviously couldn't miss that!) the service was great! The table was set and candles lit creating a lovely ambience and David and/or his staff were up and down 5 times with our courses. After so many highlights it was difficult to choose the best but I think the "Le Sabrage" (beheading a bottle of champagne with a saber) experience had to be up there! (link below) That was a first for me, I loved it! although I don't think David realised the danger he was in putting me in charge of a massive sword with alcohol on board!! ;-) .....we will definitely be back at some point if can persuade family to babysit our fur babies again!..big thanks to David, Alice and the rest of the front of house staff who unfortunately I didn't find out the names of and to Sara who looked after our room; sorry Sara for the heart attack! :-) ..big thumbs up to Frenchgate! :-)

Stayed here for three nights arriving on 30 May. Had booked the "annex" room, which is seperate from main hotel, but only a couple of steps from main entrance. Two very minor quibbles. Couldn't get wi-fi connection in this room, and only one bedside table. Not huge issues as wi-fi easily picked up in main hotel, and we improvised re reading light. Your window looks directly onto Frenchgate, but blinds maintain privacy, and noise not an issue.

Room very comfortable with a 7 foot bed with good quality bedding. One of the most comfortable sleeps we've had. Good quality tea and coffee on the hospitality tray, and a decanter available for iced water, though we didn't use it. Adjustable room lighting available.

Bathroom spacious with plenty of hot water, good water pressure, and a fantastic roll top bath. No shower in annex room, but a touch of humour with a tankard hanging on the wall underneath a sign for "shower". Various lighting possibilities in bathroom also. Two mirrors in place.

Only used restaurant for breakfast. Absolutely wonderful. Home made granola was a treat, and cooked breakfast plentiful, hot, and flavoursome. Very nice black pudding -- Doreen's I believe?

Nice bar and communal areas, and owner David happy to chat. Didn't find this intrusive, just appeared to be someone genuinely interested in his guests. Found all the staff top class. Quality bottled beers more than made up for lack of cask ale, but Richmond has many pubs serving the latter.

Gardens nice, and car park available at back. Could be a little bit tight depending on vehicle size etc., but free parking possible in Lile Close and on Frenchgate. Central Richmond a mere 10 minutes away on foot.

Really worth seeking this place out, and we really do hope to return.

The hotel is in walking distance of the main square and in a good location for touring the area. We had a lovely welcome and were both individually shown around or rooms and told how the lighting and shower, etc worked. I was lucky to be upgraded, and had a nice large bath.
Fittings and furnishings all very good quality, and the blue lighting is a nice touch. The public areas are also very nice, especially the lounge.
We were surprised that the restaurant wasn't open every evening, but the receptionist did book a restaurant elsewere for us on the Monday evening. The food was lovely, but the drinks a little over-priced.
The garden is pretty, but does require some attention...particularly the steps which are quite dangerous in places.

Room Tip: Superior rooms have a bath, rather than just a shower cubicle and are generally larger.

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left a fantastic stay. The room was fab, a luxurious wet room and beautiful bed. The evening meal was extremely good, the food looked fabulous and tasted as it looked. It is a little bit more expensive but well worth the extra. If you are looking for a romantic getaway this is ideal. A beautiful setting and wonderful hotel. David the owner makes you feel at home, not intrusive, but there when you need a top up !
We will definitely be back.

Lovely hotel with large comfy bed and quality linen, large bathroom with roll top bath and quality towels. perfectly placed to walk into town or the countryside but on a nice quiet street. hospitality was good and breakfast was good. The only negative were we could not get wifi in our room as it was a cottage next door to the hotel, you could get it in the hotel although i did not try, also the room only had one bedside table so it was difficult for two people to read in bed. Overall i would recommend the hotel as the negatives are only small and did not spoil the stay.
