“I'd go back for the jam alone...”
Reviewed 31 July 2008

My partner and I spent two nights at Willance House at the beginning of a stay in the Dales. It was the ideal spot to start from given it was the first few days of a long needed holiday and we couldn't have picked a nicer B&B. We stayed in the four-poster room which came with the comfiest bed and a lovely window seat out on to the charming Frenchgate street. The house itself has been beautifully maintained and the rooms retain the charm of this old building without making sacrifices for modern amenities - the en-suite bathroom in particular was large and boasted a great shower and a heated towel rail. The B&B is in a great location for exploring the town and is directly opposite the excellent Frenchgate restaurant from where you can stumble home with a full stomach (and a wobbly head). The breakfasts are a treat with choice of lovely jams being the highlight for me!

We arrived at Willance house following 2 1/2 days of walking in the rain. They were so kind and understanding of all of our wet and muddy "kit". For a nominal sum, they washed our clothes and returned them clean and folded to our beds while we were out seeing the lovely town of Richmond.

The room was cozy with lots of character. We loved it! The house is very old, and it was interesting to look into the historical aspects as well.

The breakfast was probably the best as well! They had lovely fresh fruits and wonderful sausages from a local farm. Really great.

I found details of this Hotel on the fab website and thought it sounded good. I contacted the owner Colin as we were booking with another couple for 1 night so wanted to reserve 2 rooms. Colin was most helpful and promised to hold the rooms as long as we posted deposits by return.
We got a lovely confirmation letter and map within a couple of days which was most helpful.
On the day of arrival we were met by Colin who showed us to our room and asked if we would like a tea /coffee we accepted the offer and he explained it would be left in the lounge in ten minutes. This was most kind as they have a great choice of drinks in room (Horlicks, Decaf, coffee tea, hot choc and a jar of biscuits and plenty of them -as well as a tiny tea pot!)
When we went down the tea tray with biscuits was left for us at our leisure. A lovely touch after a long journey.
We did see Colin and Sandra later and asked for information on Local Restaurants they couldn't be more pleasant and helpful.
Our room was the cleanest I've ever stayed in! Beautiful comfy beds with egyptian cotton soft sheets and towels the bathroom was so clean it was as if we were the first to stay there. Great Power shower plenty of hot water. Spare blankets were even stored in zip up plastic bags to keep them clean.
Breakfast was beautiful loads of choice very fresh - highly recommend the porridge and fresh fruit.
The location is great few minutes from Market Square.

We can honestly say it was so warm and cosey 1 night wasn't enough it was so relaxing we didn't want to come home! Colin and Sandra are great hosts really genuine nice people who are there to help but leave you in privacy. My Mum booked on my return she highly recommends it too. Great priced luxury, can't wait to go back!!!!!

My husband & I stayed here while visiting Richmond and the surrounding area. I honestly can't say enough nice things about this place and the people who operate it. The room was clean, quiet and full of little touches that show the owners really think about their guests needs. (i.e. a tray for muddy shoes for ramblers coming in off the nearby moors, a guestbook with recommendations on pubs and ghost tours) Good breakfast. The owners are incredibly friendly - we called to let them know we were coming and they got out a local bus schedule to help us find the ideal route from the town we were calling from. If you want a really superb place to stay for a reasonable price in a lovely town, look no further!

Willance Guest House is reportedly the oldest house in Richmond and although it has been a guest house for some years it has recently been taken over by Colin and Sandra and completely renovated.
It is in a great, central location so it is easy to walk around the town or travel further if you want to experience the wonder of N. Yorkshire.
The rooms are tastefully decorated with really comfortable beds and soft sheets. Their attention to detail is very impressive.
The breakfast was also substantial with all the food, including the jams, locally sourced.
A very enjoyable, comfortable and reasonably priced stay - I've already reccommended it to friends
