“Lovely place to stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 October 2013

Bright, spacious, well equipped lodge - great customer service and lovely location - quiet yet very close to richmond, with all the amenities you could want. We had a lovely few days here and will definitely now visit other Natural Retreats sites after this.
The customer service was excellent, from before we even got there, the phone calls and emails before arrival ( local info, recommendations etc) - I got the feeling nothing would be too much trouble. Even got a call to say the lodge would be ready early ( nice touch). Lovely welcome hamper ( free) on arrival, with biscuits, wine!cheese, bread, jam eggs and butter and milk etc in fridge. And the resort manager came to say hello and give his mobile number - a lovely welcome.
The lodge itself ( we were in 17 - one of the premium site lodges) was bright, modern and airy - just like the internet pictures - no nasty surprises or let down. Well equipped kitchen, with everything you'd want if cooking for yourself ( though the local restaurants and pubs are excellent). Free logs for the fire ( with extra available to buy if you want). And a Well designed site , we couldn't even see the other lodges from where we were, just looked out through the floor to ceiling windows on to the lovely countryside view.
Just one word of warning - to make the best use of space, there is no hallway, which means the bedrooms open onto the open space living area. This creates a large airy space, but it does mean that if any in your party will be going to bed or getting up at different times to the others then noise from the living area carries and may be a problem ( I bought ear plugs at boots for a couple of quid - problem sorted!)
Just a couple of gripes that stop me giving this five stars - first, the wifi. No nice way to say this, it is pants! At the best times it was painfully slow, but more often it was so slow that it was unusable, and often there was simply no signal at all. This was a surprise to me as in this standard of accommodation I'd assume a good wifi connection as a given, just as I'd expect hot water, so this was poor - SORT IT!
Secondly, a more minor gripe - the floor to ceiling windows and the views are a huge feature of the lodge so it's a shame not to show them off to their best. We arrived on a lovely sunny night, but unfortunately this showed off the hand prints and other marks on the windows from previous residents. A bit of time spent cleaning the windows would have created a real wow entrance.
Minor gripes though - all in all an excellent stay.

We've just spent a nice couple of days at Natural Retreats Yorkshire Dales, our daughter, her partner with their dog, are staying for the week and 4 of us spent sometime with them. By following the directions given we found the retreat quite easily. The lodge was situated at the top of quite a steep incline, nice and quiet and not overlooked. Unfortunately the weather wasn't the best with drizzle and overcast, meaning while the views were still nice, they were misty, also the wild life didn't appear as much as would be the case in better weather.
The lodge provides accommodation for up to 6 adults, While the decor is basic, it as a quite spacious combined living area and kitchen. Large sofa just accommodates 6 people. The heating system is quite good and the back up log burner is a nice touch, you can of course use the log burner as a first choice of heating. TV, games console (plays DVD's), internet access and reading materials provide in house entertainment if required. The kitchen was well equipped and had extras such a dishwasher and coffee making machine, only real negatives for the kitchen is a lack of instruction to use the machines, like the coffee machine and the refrigeration equipment is not large enough. The large table and seating makes meals together enjoyable. The bathroom facilities both en-suite and family are very good with nice hot water. Bedrooms are just about big enough, comfortable but storage space is at a premium. The outside veranda would be nice in good weather with table and chairs and deck chairs.
Nice touches are the welcome hamper and the amount of information for walks, places to go and things to do, the provision of individual towels, both bath and hand and the site managers visit to check everything is alright. The provision of a hand brush and pan to sweep up anything dropped would be nice.
The resort itself is nicely set out and lodge numbers pretty easy to find and as previously stated, offers nice views, better in better weather.
The village of Richmond is within easy walking distance either along the road or by fields and river Swale, but you need to be aware that some of the inclines are quite steep and some quite long especially on return journey.
All in all I think the lodge represented very good value for money and would recommend them.

Room Tip: Some lodges are not overlooked but sometimes cost extra, not worth bothering in my opinion

Lovely lodge very modern with everything you could want kitchen stocked with eco products. Wonderful views from the large windows. I never wanted to pull the blinds down. Lots of bunnies running around. Snow outside however very toasty inside with the log burner on.
Hamper is a very good quality.
Walks in the snow around the lodges and it does feel remote even though you are very near to Richmond.

Stayed for long weekend - 3 couples and 2 dogs

Positives:
Fantastic location - great walks from cabins; lovely pubs in driving distance (many take dogs - we went to The Heifer in Scorton which was fantastic) and nearby Richmond a must to walk around.
Consierge service and manager faultless.
Peaceful location.
Bedding clean and comfortable.
Towels clean and good quality.
Lovely hot showers.
Cabin generally clean (see negatives below).
Big table for dining.
Comfortable sofa.
Good range of kitchgen equipment - eg coffee machine, d/w, microwave etc.
Lovely hamper on arrival - esp delicious butter & cheese.
At time of staying we were able to book our own private chef - Liz, who was excellent (think it was her last time though).

Negatives
Fridge no where near big enough - once we had our wine & beer in for 3 nights that was it! They need to get one of those big smeg things - there is plenty of room.
Freezer tiny.
Insufficient work surfaces in kitchen.
D/W doesn't get all dishes clean - maybe due to use of ecover tablets?
Insufficient storage for food.
Sofa not big enough for 6 adults.
White blinds showing dirt marks - need a good wash.

Overall though we had a great time and the negatives did not in any way detract from a fabulous place to stay. Would I stay again? Yes. Would I have expected slightly more attention to detail and some other extra touches? Yes.

We had the 3 bed lodge with ensuites on each room, set back and halfway uphill we had a great view. Very well appointed and clean, loved the welcome hamper. Coffee machine a great addition if only we could have worked out how to use it - some instructions would have been good! It's about 35 mins walk into Richmond if you go the road way or you can have an adventure by going through the fields and make it as long as you like - we picked up the river route which was a pleasant hour or so walk. Taxi's are plentiful if you can't make the walk back - around £5 one way. We will definitely be returning.

Just returned from a fabulous stay.

Site- secluded and well kept - entrance road and some of the higher lodges are on a steep road, so may be tricky in winter.

Lodge - well equipped, lovely welcome hamper, make sure you upgrade to get the bacon and sausage, the quality is fantastic. The lodge is stocked with Ecover products to keep with the eco theme - slight grip (but minor), the sink and loo's needed a good bleach, I think the eco products didn't quite cut it, but easily resolved. Overall standard was very clean, nice comfy beds, great log fire - everything you could want.

Premium lodge - we paid the extra premium for a lodge that was more secluded -it certainly wasn't overlooked and we were high on the hillside - however after being to the site, I would have happily stayed anywhere. We will definitely visit again, but I wouldn't bother to pay for the premium location.

Concierge service - another added bonus - within 15 mins of booking the concierge was on the phone. When I called to pay the balance and add extra, I dealt with the lovely Kelly Rowlands. On site the manager pops in to make sure all is ok - perfect.

Room Tip: All the lodges are great - not worth paying for a premium location. Make sure you upgrade your hampe...

This was our second trip to Natural Retreats in Richmond in the Yorkshire Dales and it didn't disappoint. The lodge was simple but extremely well presented, clean and comfortable with a much-appreciated welcome hamper. The coffee machine was a welcome addition since our last visit at New Year! The site manager called by to see if we'd settled in OK and was on hand if we needed anything. The location is beautiful and peaceful and we even enjoyed breakfast on the veranda which for September, was a real treat. The walk into Richmond is very pleasant just a bit uphill on the way back!
