“Delicious fresh fish”
Reviewed 7 June 2012

Looking for a quick local supper we visited this pub recently under new ownership. The bar was busy so opted for the restaurant, which also filled quite quickly. I ordered a whole plaice which was fresh and delicate and my husband had the beefburger which he reported perfectly cooked and still juicy.

“Busy on the Boat Show weekend”
Reviewed 5 June 2012

We were in a party of 15 with a reservation for 7.30 but it took a while for everyone to get settled mainly because the bar service was very slow. Three staff but seemed to spend a long time with their backs to the customers with drinks for the restaurant orders taking precedence.

Full credit and thanks to our waitress for taking our orders with a smile despite the loud ambient noise from our table and others. Not her fault that she was misinformed by the kitchen that specials were on/off, so a plaice (well - a dab) substituted for trout with seafood linguine. Obviously, the fish was pan fried in butter, not drained, and tipped over the pasta so it was swimming in ghee.

White bait starters seemed very small, soup generously large and excellent. Ribeye steaks (rare, med and med/rare) mixed up by the kitchen but OK, not brilliant, for £14.95 plus a sauce for £2.00.

Sadly the mussels were so salty as to be almost inedible. Looked great in a big pot but why did the chef throw in so much extra salt I wonder. Several people tasted them and agreed but when mentioned to staff the reaction was 'they are normal'. No chance of mopping up the juice, it was awful.

Given the size of our table it was OK. Maybe over busy due to the boat show but it's the attention to detail that really counts regardless of the numbers. Nevertheless a good party, with a great host, in a nice dining room.
