Owner description: One of Britain’s grandest and best-preserved stately homes with a fabulous art collection and a restored 18th-century designed landscape gardens, woodlands and a grand country park. It is open every Easter and August for guided tours and at other times of the year for special events. Groups can visit all year round by appointment. Boughton has some of the best-preserved baroque State Rooms in the British Isles. Here you can walk through grand apartments of contrasting character decorated in extravagant yet elegant taste with the finest artworks of the House’s golden era. Once you’ve had your tour of the House, you can step out into the surrounding country park. Its tranquil delights have been carefully restored over the last decade, and now there are wide sculptured lawns to survey, serene lakes, waterways, woods and avenues of trees to be strolled down.

The house and grounds are maintained to a very high standard. The Orpheus installation in the garden is worth the entrance money on its own! The walled garden is lovely and is a spectacular array of fragrance and colour. The house tour is too long and by the end there has been too much to assimilate. Worth a couple of hours of your time. Go!

Thank you very much for the feedback and glad you enjoyed your visit.

Getting the right balance of the tours is tricky and for some can seem either to short or too long but as you note there is a vast variety of artefacts and history to absorb and we try to do it justice.

best wishes

First off we only visited the grounds which were very beautiful. Although being historical house and grounds it is understandable it was frustrating that all the paths were gravelled and not very smooth. Luckily my husband used an electric wheelchair as pushing a manual chair through the in places deep gravel and over rutted paths would have been exhausting.
We were also disappointed with the tea room. The staff were not very personable or helpful. We were advised they only served filter code (which was bitter and like warm) to another customer served a cafetiere! The cake was also dry and over priced (they did also bring it fresh cakes whilst we were eating). On a positive side they offered 2 gluten free cakes, soup and rolls.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

As noted in our online accessibility document there are a few deeper gravel paths in the walled garden but all those near the house have a light sprinkling of gravel. There are also some grass paths in the gardens and wider landscape.

I am sorry about the cake and coffee the tearooms and will look at this with that element of the team.

We were so fortunate to join a group and visit this amazing place as it is only open to public in August
It is the home of Dukes of Buccleuch and the largest landowners in Europe and the house is full of treasures
Unlike many other grand houses it is not commercialized
We had an amazing guide Jennifer who was so knowledgeable and passionate about all the treasures in this house - amazing collection of sevres and petra dura, not only Mortlake but flemish and french tapestries and a host of paintings by Reynolds and Gainsborough and not to mention El Greco
The grounds are magnificent and partly modernistic and the walled garden must be a sight to behold when not impacted by the hot weather
