Owner description: One of Britain’s grandest and best-preserved stately homes with a fabulous art collection and a restored 18th-century designed landscape gardens, woodlands and a grand country park. It is open every Easter and August for guided tours and at other times of the year for special events. Groups can visit all year round by appointment. Boughton has some of the best-preserved baroque State Rooms in the British Isles. Here you can walk through grand apartments of contrasting character decorated in extravagant yet elegant taste with the finest artworks of the House’s golden era. Once you’ve had your tour of the House, you can step out into the surrounding country park. Its tranquil delights have been carefully restored over the last decade, and now there are wide sculptured lawns to survey, serene lakes, waterways, woods and avenues of trees to be strolled down.

We live near Bowhill so were keen to see the duke's English home. We were there on August 5th and the guide who took us round at 2.15pm was very good - unfortunately I didn't catch her name. There was plenty of interest and I was specially delighted to see the late duchess's wedding dress as I recall seeing her wedding photo in the newspapers in 1953 - I was eight and thought she was beautiful! However, as she lived in Bowhill, couldn't the dress be put on display there for a while? Enjoyable visit but we booked on line and didn't realise there were two different tours. As we had a journey ahead of us we couldn't stay for the other tour at 3pm which was disappointing.

Thanks very much for the review and delighted you enjoyed your visit

It may be that on its return to Bowhill it will go on display as it required considerable conservation to be able to go on show here but I don't know the current thoughts.

Best wishes

Commercial exploitation of the park and garden has spoilt a very beautiful site and this is probably my third and last visit.
There was a huge marquee with a very noisy Indian wedding on the lawn near the house and the fountain and a large area of parkland was fenced off in preparation for some Festival with men putting up huge tents, hammering and drilling. It was impossible to escape noise.
The catering was excellent and the staff both friendly and efficient.

Thanks very much for your review and I am sorry that our events did intrude on your enjoyment of the day.

We do need to generate considerable sums to safeguard, conserve and protect the wonderful collection, the House itself and its surroundings and this does mean that other events do take place in and around the House - as they have done for centuries.

A number of other day visitors did say how much they enjoyed the wedding going on and a few were even swaying to the music!

I do think that both the wedding - which was for a lovely local family - and the forthcoming Greenbelt festival do provide an opportunity for non traditional visitors to explore and enjoy the House and gardens.

We visited on an August afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed two very informative tours with so much on view. The rooms for free flow were also packed with exhibits and you come away wondering why it is not more widely known and better supported. Prices are certainly reasonable and there is no commercial pressure once you are inside.
The gardens too are well worth exploring and you will find the afternoon disappears rapidly, providing you refuel at the tearoom at some stage.

Guide very informative. Nice lunch the tours were just long enough with a hours rest inbetween. Cannot believe have not been here before. Arranged a day with sisters for a day out we all enjoyed. Very English. Non commercialised. Only 20 in our group (I counted). Just right.

The house and grounds are maintained to a very high standard. The Orpheus installation in the garden is worth the entrance money on its own! The walled garden is lovely and is a spectacular array of fragrance and colour. The house tour is too long and by the end there has been too much to assimilate. Worth a couple of hours of your time. Go!

Thank you very much for the feedback and glad you enjoyed your visit.

Getting the right balance of the tours is tricky and for some can seem either to short or too long but as you note there is a vast variety of artefacts and history to absorb and we try to do it justice.
