Owner description: One of Britain’s grandest and best-preserved stately homes with a fabulous art collection and a restored 18th-century designed landscape gardens, woodlands and a grand country park. It is open every Easter and August for guided tours and at other times of the year for special events. Groups can visit all year round by appointment. Boughton has some of the best-preserved baroque State Rooms in the British Isles. Here you can walk through grand apartments of contrasting character decorated in extravagant yet elegant taste with the finest artworks of the House’s golden era. Once you’ve had your tour of the House, you can step out into the surrounding country park. Its tranquil delights have been carefully restored over the last decade, and now there are wide sculptured lawns to survey, serene lakes, waterways, woods and avenues of trees to be strolled down.

I have been coming to Boughton for 5 years now as part of the Greenbelt Festival. I am sorry to say I have yet to make it inside the house despite the fact that it is used for a few bits of programming, but just want to say what stunning grounds it is set in. Watching my kids play on the lawn in front of the grand building, sitting reflecting the other side of the lake, and listening to music or watching theatre in this stunning location makes the best festival even better.

I visited this beautiful house (for the second time) as part of my stay at the Greenbelt Festival. The grounds are a stunning venue for such a creative, joyful and thoughtful event and I really appreciate the courage and generosity of Boughton House decision makers to share the surroundings with so many for a weekend. I was very moved to learn of Duke Ralph Montagu's welcome and employment of refugees around 1685 as I listen to refugee stories in 2018. The Tapestry Room was a lovely space for the 18 paintings by a young woman sadly refused a visa to accompany her stunning work . It was surreal to be able to talk to her in sunny, busy Istanbul via Skype from the peaceful and gracious (but rainy) surroundings of Boughton. Thank you so much!!

the building outside looks beautiful. The setting with the water features is stunning. However the same cannot be said for inside! We thought it was a little plain for such a grand building. As the guide said the walls are painted in ‘Boughton drab’. We had two tour guides who were very knowledgeable and helpful. The gardens and water features are lovely. We visited the tea room but were disappointed with the size and quality of the scones. There is a fully stocked second hand bookshop and a gift shop. The house has very limited opening hours throughout the year.

Thank you very much for the review.

I am glad you enjoyed the landscape and gardens but sorry you did not appreciate the interiors.

The walls of the State Apartments are In "Boughton Drab" the original colour from the 18th century that allows the fine art to stand out more clearly and the rooms are also furnished with part of one of the best art collections in the British isles.

Whilst we are only open to the public for August and some Bank Holidays we do open for pre-booked coach parties throughout the year.

Boughton House have achieved an excellent blend of knowledge and anecdote on the tours of their house with a choice of three tours covering different parts of the house. Along with excellent gardens and views over the estate this is excellent value for money.

We were briefly at Wicksteed Park in the morning so it combined quite easily as it opens only in the afternoon. On our arrival at 2pm we booked into the 3.30pm Great Hall tour, leaving time for a cup of tea and a walk round the landscape features. The bank holiday Greenbelt festival was being set up but did not interfere with our enjoyment of the lakes. Orpheus was best appreciated by walking down to the bottom and feeling the tranquillity of the structure. However we did not have time for some of the other garden areas.
The house tour was led by a very clear and informative lady. After quite a long introduction in the first room, and there being several young children in the group, I initially thought it would be a bit tedious. I was wrong, as the children were very well behaved and the tour pace picked up. The collection of paintings and tapestries were remarkable. I am not usually moved by cases of china plates but the sky blue display case was stunning. We finished with just enough time to see the exhibition and the quirky Chinese summer house.
A very enjoyable three hours.
