We had a great lunch in the cafe today - lovely staff, fab meat with some really smashing chips. They also allowed us to bring our dog in too. Prices were very reasonable too. Could not have been better.

Had a lovely lunch in front of the log burning stove with the dogs, very big portions, great value for money, really enjoyed it, lovely wee gift shop too with lots of handmade gifts.

The Hemmel Cafe is a little gem in Allenheads. The coffee is excellent and the carrot cake (made on the premises) is very, very good. Hearty lunches available during the week, Sunday lunchtime roasts and 'fish and chips' on the first 'FRYDAY' every month (although make sure you book in advance for the fish and chips!).

The cafe also has a craft shop with lots of lovely products from local producers and artists. A nature trail and children's playground are right next to the cafe and best of all you may even get to see the resident red squirrels.

Would I make a special trip to The Hemmel cafe ? - probably not. But as a place to stop & have lunch or coffee /cakes whilst on a trip out - it ticks the box perfectly. Service was a little chaotic - but hey - its not a 5star restaurant. The food is homely & comforting .

On a cold winter Sunday the cosy interior and warm welcome was appreciated. In addition to the usual café snacks, good looking sandwiches, scones and cakes, soups, baked potatoes and toasties you can also have a full blown and excellent lunch with wine. Our plates were piled high with generous portions of roast beef, mashed and roast potatoes, big Yorkshire puddings well cooked veggies and plenty of gravy. We could only just manage one portion of a gorgeous sticky toffee pudding between us. You can also have a glass or a bottle of wine at very reasonable price. (Not sure where else you can get a bottle of wine for under a tenner). Food prices were very competitive and the quality high. The friendly and warm service matched the country-cosy décor - the wood burning stove, pleasant, atmosphere and an upper level with a comfortable leather sofa and books invited you to relax. .
