Description: Grannies Tea room and Delicatessen was established around 1984, then the tearoom only held a couple of tables placed within the shop. It was only later, in 1989, that the intimate downstairs tea room was developed within the basement where the old fashioned coal chutes, old style steps, fireplace and flagstone flooring can still be seen. Grannies is a strong advocate for the local food movement in Alnwick, and offers a wide range of local produce within the deli, shop and tea room.

“Cafe of choice.”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

We have been to Grannies many times and we are never disappointed with this eatery.
The café itself is in a cellar below a deli which is where the food preparation is so the staircase is always busy with the helpful and friendly staff running up and down, but do not let this put you off visiting.
The food is always wonderful straight from the deli and always fresh as is the bread so the smells within the shop are going to add to your appetite.
The eating area is rather cramped and small but I think this makes Grannines such a wonderful find with its nooks and crannies and uneven floor. So because of it's small size I would always recommend booking a table. Check out the photo's on Tripadvisor, Enjoy.

“A Hidden Gem”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

We had lunch, the quality and size of the portions leave you wondering if you need an evening meal. The eating area is below the shop and a surprise when you first enter. A little cramped, but laid out quite well. The stairs do not make it baby/invalid welcome, but it is an old building. Excellent choice and good value. You can butthe chutneys etc. in the shop.
