“Spoilt by toothache!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2014

Booked a special break for Christmas as has been a difficult year. Sadly had to leave after 2 nights due to a tooth abscess which required hospitalisation! Very disappointed as things were shaping up for a great stay.
Thanks to all staff for excellent service , sympathy and support .

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter.

We booked this as we were in Alnwick over the Christmas period, looked forward to it as it was something we never do......afternoon teas. We had this vision of it being something special, but how disappointed were we. It was a quiet night in the Hardy's, but that didn't matter to us.
We sat down and the waitress gave us a choice of sandwiches, not a great choice for the money we had paid. We got teas and coffees, then the sandwiches arrived, equivelant of 8 slices of bread with the crusts cut off and cut into triangles. 4 triangles of each flavour, with a bit of garnish and that was it !!!!!. Nothing else.

We then got a scone, Christmas cake slice and a square of Victoria sponge.... all for the sum of £26..... this was so untrue we were gobsmacked. We couldn't fault the service, it was excellent, but the food was just your basic corner café style and nothing else.

No effort was made by the chef to make it anything other than ordinary. I'm not asking for pipes and whistles but for £26 come on.... make some effort at least, just basic sandwiches on a platter.

We paid £40 for a 2 course dinner the previous day for 2 people at a different place which was value for money, this was a huge disappointment, sorry White Swan. You weren't in the same league.

My partner and I have just spent a fantastic weekend in the beautiful and quaint town of Alnwick. If you are wanting to visit Alnwick for the weekend then this truly is the only hotel for you to stay in. It has an absolutely fantastic location, situated in the very heart of Alnwick and is a stone's throw away from the Gardens. I would also highly recommend getting dinner reservations at the fantastic Treehouse restaurant, just round the corner from the hotel. One of the best restaurants I have ever eaten in!

The rooms of the hotel are very comfortable and are a nice size. The staff are also extremely welcoming and are very polite and friendly. I have to say a special thank you to Keith, the night porter, for looking after my partner and I into the early hours of the morning. The bar was kept open for us all night! The hotel has a unique charm to it and we left feeling extremely satisfied. We will definitely be making a return visit!

Easy drive down the A1 to Alnwick. Picked this hotel after reading the reviews. We were not disappointed. Arrived early, but the room was ready. We had been upgraded to a superior room, but there was a slight problem with this, so we opted to move to a 'normal' room. This was fine for us with everything we needed.
On arrival, reception staff were very helpful, giving tips on where to go round town, what to see etc.We had a few hours wandering around town, then came back for our afternoon tea. This was very good, with good selection of sandwiches, cakes and plenty of tea or coffee if you prefer.
Then went for a walk up to Barter Books. What a place !!!!!! Open fire in reception area as you walk in with chairs to the sides for reading gives you an idea of what to expect. Other rooms with open fires and seating areas, cafe to keep you fed and watered. What more could you want. Excellent place, spent hours there the next day.
On the way back to the hotel we had to walk round the town centre again as the christmas lights were on. Lots of thought put into placing lights to have a related theme to the premises they were on.
Back to the hotel for our evening meal.Glass of Prosecco and canapes before the meal were a very good way to start. All 3 courses were very good, could not fault any of the food. Service was also good with staff always checking if everything was fine. Even the coffee after the meal was very good, even though i don;t drink a lot of it.
Could not fault this hotel, we look forward to returning.

We spent a Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning as part of a wedding ceremony and reception. Whilst the hotel cannot be described as disabled friendly, my wife, who has restricted mobility, received every assistance she required from Jannick and his team. When ever assistance was required, the help given was professional and sensitive. The meals to were excellent.

Returned to the White Swan for the third time in the last year, yet again great food, great service in the unique SS Olympic " Belle époque " dinning room. A great location for exploring the local area, last time Alnwick Castle Gardens, on this occasion a pilgrimage to Lindisfarne, next time Hadrian's wall.
Food trip try the blackcurrant and liquorice ice cream

We stayed here for our friends wedding.

The hotel check in was 3pm however as our wedding was at 1pm the hotel made sure all the rooms were ready early.

The staff on the reception were very friendly and helpful.

The hotel room itself was on the small side however what do you actually need to do apart from sleep and get ready. So the size was fine for our needs. The Tea/Coffee was high branded items too. The bathroom / shower was clean and tidy and the shower was hot all the time and quite powerful.

The only downside we were on the ground level next to the main high street, personally i never heard a noise but my partner and friends in the next room did hear a lot of noise, I suspect being on a higher level would help.

The breakfast was very good, The Continental range had a wide choice and the Cooked breakfast came out hot and fresh. The Gluten free option was GLUTEN FREE BREAD and the cooked breakfast was served without Hash Browns and Sausages. Possible would like them to serve gluten free sausages which most places sell now.

Overall i would be happy to stay again.

Room Tip: Avoid the Ground Floor Room 7/8 i know are next to the main road.
